At Rs.6 a night, Delhi's night shelters probably offer the cheapest accommodation in town. So even those who can afford better are opting for it - leaving the homeless and needy scurrying for space and shelter in the cruel cold. The MCD has set up 25 night shelters across the city of which two are for women and children. Most of these shelters are in the busy areas of the capital like market places and near railway stations. The functioning of 15 of these shelters which offer accommodation at Rs.6 a night are taken care of by the Ashraya Adhikar Abhiyan (AAA) under ActionAid India.

The city has more than 100,000 people living on the roads. However, only a small portion of that population finds a place in the night shelters.

Good idea.  Inview of the cold  these kind of shelters should be mooted in other places. If not permanent ,temporary.

i would agree with mr.shahid if such are meant for the homeless than it should reach to them first then if situation allows it can be further allocated .the authorities should instead impart id's for the deserving beneficiaries which would be subjected to renewation after a week or two .this way ,it may not bring change substantialy but would provide temporary relief for homeless masses .and wat about those labourers  who are contracted with construction companies and aren't provided with sufficient accommodation facilities and their kids are wandering  on streets while their parents are working .

this topic comes up for debate every winter in delhi. ofcourse the delhi govt. takes note of it each time..what do other cities do? any idea?

NGOs working in this area hv there parameters and so many (needy) get filtered in the process. so, the issue remains as it is.

For shelter in the night, there is no difference between "Homeless" and "Needy". Government has made these night shelters keeping in consideration these people only. Because of less shelters and overpopulation, not all gets this benifit.
