Whatever your ability may be, it is considered as skill otherwise called as Art.  The knowledge whatever you obtain through formal education is considered as scientific knowledge.  You need to have a formal education for others to recognise what ur.

It is totally wrong that all companies preferred the degree more than knowledge while it is so much required. because most of the students have not degree or any diploma but they have more knowledge other than a graduate. And if company want to grow more than it should prefer knowledge not a simple paper(degree)
