The other day I attend my best friends wedding and he is beaming with happiness. Isn’t she fair and lovely is what he asked me. I was taken aback with the kind of question an educated men put forth me. Are all Indians so obsessed of having fairness in their looks?

Then I thought...... if fairness was not desired by Indians, would a fairness cream have any chance of success?

Will we ever change this attitude? Tall, Slim, "Fair" is the slogan used for hunting bride and groom....!!

Comment Truthfully...!!

Fair is always beautiful which does not mean dark skinned people are ugly. Generally we have something to represent something. Like apple means red, shoe mean black, these are some of our perceptions in the same way Indian have the perception on fair means beautiful.

The reason is Indians are generally dark skinned and when they see a fair skinned person it looks beautiful for them. So in India fair means beautiful .....

one persons remarks cannot be generalised for all the indians. However, in this big country we have enough probability of bumping into such immature people who needs your approval for their selection of life partner. accept the fact that education has no connection with maturity level and the ability to appreciate beauty............. beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

fair is always beautiful because if you are fair it is second thing that are you smart or your face is cute. .it will be an added benefit to you. . but not being fair is not a curse the confidence and the will power matters

fair is always beautiful...it attracts lots of attention. you have an added plus point when you are fair you don have to worry about colors. you can experiment any color and all the color suits a fair skin person. Being fair is always termed beautiful and this will never get eradicated from the society.

Mr Bharat Kumar,

If this topic did not have any sense then why u have to comment. There are sensible people who are commenting on this topic. Do you know that fairness cream market growth rate is 15% to 20% each year. HUL alone has 75% market share for fair and lovely brand. I understand Lord Hanuman RAMA KRISHNA were not fair but that does not have anything to do with the generation now. please stop comparing human with lords. They were happy being dark but human wants are different if we were happy like the way we are then fair and lovely brand would have been a flop brand by now.

Yes i agree with Sajin...when it comes to geographical specialties, every flavor has its taste and craving. It is ones representation be it fair or dark. Just be happy and be yourself fair need not be beautiful always. we get a lot of people discriminating the darker race but it only shows their disrespect to the other human.

So all you fair and un-fair people its gods gift just be contended.

fair is beautiful only.but it depends on the geographical specialties.. can we go to African countries and say fair is beautiful.. it is not at all possible.. it is only our concept that fair is good and dark is bad... also in Indian subcontinental it will change.. Kashmir people will be more fair.. but coming to southern side it is not possible.. i think the concept is imposed by the British when they ruled India.. the discrimination is still alive because we are always following the west.. other wise i don't think it is a subject to discuss...

Yes fair is beautiful....everybody wants to look fair. Some tell me look at bipasha, kajol, rani, Nandita etc etc...they are dark yet beautiful. Ah let me tell to all those who say dark skin doesn't matter! It matters a lot...Even all this actress have had their skin treatment done to become fair. With all the make up even a dark ghost looks better. Women try hard to be fair because they are scared not to find alliance at the right age....the myth of fair being beautiful has been there since ages.

I believe that a person appearance can never decide his/her beauty, the real beauty depends on a person's behavior towards other people.

Abhijit, Go west and they are obseesed with "tan". Most of my european friends envy my "brown" skin. It is very cultural and a personal opinion. Yes i think indians are obssessed with fair. But then tell me a culture/ country/ group that doesnt have a bias of their own. When i go on a date i look for a man with intelligence. So that is my bias. Each to their own. It is not about education. It is about perceptual filters and conditioning.

Really .... an amazing question and situation. Complexion .. skin color .. !

U think Indians are obsessed ? May be .... may not be. Think cosmetic industry might have a hand behind ? Think ... ( ladies ) Beauty Contests may have also some influence ?

What 'darmetologists" have to say ... may (sometimes) extra fair skin indicate 'bad skin' ? Have chances of skin cancers ? Why people from snowy/ cloudy/ less sunshine places visit India for tanning of their skin ?

--- was not Lord Krishna of dark skin ... or King Ram .. with blue skin ? All these informations may not impact much ... becoz .. we Indians are obsessed ... !

We as individual and society are controlled by media and we think what media and business houses want us to think. Down here in western world TAN is beautiful and sexy. So, don't let media decide what you think.

Fair complexion gets noticed instantly but if there is no element of beauty then you dont get the attraction any more where as a lady with dark complexion with a beautifull face and figure gets more attarction. So the credit goes to beauty.

'fair is beautiful' does not mean being not fair is not being beautiful since beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. India is the place with tropical climate and more humidity and hence people tend to become tanned and turn dark. But you bet Indians are amongst most beautiful people and their beauty is coupled with brain and poise to carry own persona and individuality in a dignified way!

becoz indians have a mindset that only fair pple can look beautiful.....beauty lies in ones behavoiur ,though fair skin do compliment all colours but dark skin can even look much more attractive with a correct blend of shades, they can do much more experimtnts with their skin tone other than the fair ones...so all out there........,do chk out though dark n gorgeous beauties who rules the industry may be films or fashion.

What is important is inner beauty......Shakespear  said once "Things which are most beautiful are often ugliest within"..........

It's how you conduct your self and face the given situation......It is god given gift.....beautiful out side beautiful within.......ex...Mahatma Gandhi...Sachin Tendulkar

Fair is beautiful no doubt how can unfair be beautiful.... Well on a serious note, Colour is certainly one of the attributes of beauty but just one. But its upto the beholder to decide on weightage. To me 'not fair doesn't matter'.

But I do not like the argument that an educated person should not say that fair is beautiful, which means if an un-educated person says them it is justified. How can 'beauty' be seen from somebody other's eyes, or can be judged mechanically? If you like something-you do no matter that you are educated or not.

I beleive that somebody's likings or dis-likings can not be debated.

Fairness must come from the inner beauty of any person, be she/he indian or not!

I think the idealism of beauty who came in indian's mind is due to the rol of  en-lightfull of life which is made from definition of God ! Cause God is light and love.

So, be fairy on face or not, your light must come from  you inner thoughts and your behave in society. Also, is same true that the eyes are the mirror of your soul, so that... each person must know how much fairness them are sending trough their looks.

Wishing you all a wonderful and "fairly" day!

I strongly object that fair is beautiful. As saying goes... beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Sad to realise that fair is beautiful is very strong not only in India but most of the Asian region. The people who have this perspective... what would they say about africans... all are ugly... but reality has proved wrong... Naomi Campbell... african in origin and one of the top models in the market (Maybe not now). In India there are lot of women who are the top but are not fair.

Moreover... all this external white washed faces and skin will loose its shine in the course of time and end up in underground. At that point of time people will remember us not becasue we were fair but because of our character.... the way we used to interact with people... the kindness we showed etc.

All women are beautiful in their own way.

Take care

Well, Indians are generally dark, which might be the reason they like people who has fair complexion. Fair is beautiful, but being not fair doesn't mean that they are not beautiful. The meaning of the word "beautiful" has to be described here. If you just think beautiful is being fair and handsome, then most of the Indians wouldn't have get married. Beautiful is something different, its just not how the face of the person looks like, but also the true character of him/her. Unfortunately, many people are missing this quality, hmm I would rather say that the character is being masked by the fairness. This is one of the reasons why most of the couples end up in pain.
