Many executives express frustration as they attempt to reign in the chaos and expense associated with their IT investments but find little in the way of substantive guidance. The IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) has emerged as the world’s most widely accepted approach to the management and delivery of IT Services.

 

Gartner measurements show that the overall results of moving from no adoption of IT Service Management to full adoption can reduce an organization’s Total Cost of Ownership by as much as 48%.

 

ITIL currently has over 100,000 certified (trained) professionals and consultants, primarily in Europe, Australia and Canada, with only a small fraction of those certified professionals residing or practicing in the U.S.

It does help a lot. There are many frameworks and models including, CMMI, PCMM, AGILE, etc that fall under this category as well.

The issue is never with the model or the framework but with the people who try to implement it. It is usually their perspective, limited knowledge that gives these models and framework a negative value.

If these models (including ITIL) is implemented in the right way, it Does give a lot of benefits. Gartner would not spend many thousands in trying to figure out how ITIL helps nor would there be so many professionals who are trained in this framework.

It is similar to telling that PMP is a waste - based on how a few people who have not understood its intent are trying to practice it.  But there are many more managers who swear by the importance of having this certification.

Most people overcomplicate the usage of ITIL. People who lack the experience in ITIL tend to implement it one discipline at a time, trying to make use of its implementation and make it simple. Anyone that has experience in implementing ITIL will tell you that this will lead to far more problems than it will solve. Adding to this, the expenses will be high. It's a great innovation none the less.

Agreed.  ITIL alone won't provide excellent service - but it can provide a sound basis for improvement provided the enterprise manages the associated change process.
