Why philosophy? Is it an amusement? An interest? A contest of ego and intellect? Or is it something more?

Philosophy is the Love of Wisdom. To pursue philosophy on an intellectual level, allows you to discuss it's importance. As your true conception grows, it allows you to find your moral discipline and opens the doors to investigation. Whether that include nature, causes/effects, or principles of reality. Philosophy challenges what we already know and what we have yet to find out. Knowledge is power, but a power that trumps a systematically challenged value, based on logical reasoning rather than empirical methods. We can only inquire so much, without wanting to learn more about what we have inquired. There is much more to an analysis of fundamental assumptions and standard beliefs. Philosophy disciplines us and makes us "wake up". It allows us to realize we can't control everything in our life. We can create theories upon theories based on ideas, beliefs, and activities; and most likely, we will not have the correct answer.

For me, philosophy has both a practical purpose and a less 'serious' (though still valid) purpose. On a practical level, philosophy provides a fantastic means to practice thinking. Everyone knows you can practice a sport or a musical instrument to become better at it, but I think less people realize that in a very similar way, you can become very good at reasoning by practicing it. Philosophy is a perfect subject for this because the questions are hard and there's usually a legitimate counterargument to anything someone says, if you're sufficiently clever.

And on a less serious level, I think philosophy has a purely aesthetic value. A well crafted argument can be as elegant as any work of art. Just like paintings have a fundamentally different kind of beauty than symphonies, logical arguments have their own form of beauty - no better and no worse than the others, but fundamentally different.

Whats your take?
