It is not like that. Most of the necessity goods hardly have any scope for differentiation. So many products vying in the same category with almost similar features offerings have to go along with offers and discounts to lure the customers. Customers today are more informed and aware than ever before. They want full value for their money. So your statement that retail is purely dependent on offers and discounts is not correct in itself. It is true for most of the necessity goods but not for all product category.

I do not agree,,in fact Indian consumers are very discerning,,,,they want a good quality product at a reasonable prize,,& it is because we can see the sudden surge in sales during discounts,,,

Also there is a class of people which is not promotion driven,,,& they are not any less even in numbers,,, do shopping throughout the span of year,,but are scattered & hence not noticeable,,but in real terms are drivers of the growth & innovation for the marketers.

Number three,,, products or brands whose marketing is only done via channels like discount & offers, can not sustain longer I suppose,,,

For example TV Brands like Aiwa & Akai rigorously marketed their products in the same fashion,,,got initial response,,,but could not keep the momentum ,,, obviously some 'features' were missing...against that brands like Sony hardly offer such discounts or promotion & still becomes the super brands,,sustainability, trust & brand value is important...

The retail thus have all genres of marketing...& just believe that customers are real smart...take no chances,,,only quality & value can sustain.

beacuse INDIA have many brand and more compitions and going sale , discount & prmotion end of season when next season start and arrive new merchandise....
