Let me tell you third option.. and fourth too.. Perhaps he or she has abetter understanding of ownself and decides what suits them and their capacity the best.. or they are lured by the "in" feeling, i.e, they think it is cool to do MBA than doing Masters in their own branch..because of fast growth in that feild..

when students opt for a UG program they dont have a good understanding about the various courses and options available and tend to follow general-popular trend.
but while choosing a course after UG they are aware of more options and have a better understanding about their skills.

Most of them want Money. They just see how to grasp more money rather than having specialisation and satisfaction in the life. If some body tells that Satisfaction is important all other say he is mad now a days who is looking after the Job role Money playing all the things. Not only in taking UG but also in selecting the Job Most of them who has studied in different branches also go to Software field for high salaries.

Today's job trend make the student think number of times before joining PG course to take up the course which would fetch them best job with high salaries. hence they change the field.

It can't just be lack of confidence. There's also the problem of lack of access to the growth in their specialization field higher up. And the present scenario in the market is such that except for a few clichéd jobs, students of the other specializations find jobs relevant to their study inaccessible at the entry level.

I think you need to do some trial and error method to find out what exactly you like. Parental/societal pressure should not be a deciding factor.

Some extend it is true that lack of confident most of the students are changing their specialization / subject when they move from UG to PG because they don’t know, what they want so it cant be ignored that lack of guidance ,out look , future planning and present situation forced them to do so. If any experienced one guide them to choose the career in UG time then it is easier for the students to catch a big goal. So we must have to say that confusion makes the student to change their subject / specialization in PG label. Try to see 3 idiots movie for this debate.
