Khaitan ji, thanks for referral. On first glance, Hydrogen seems to be the ideal fuel for automobiles and other vehicles. It doesn't seem like one could get any cleaner burning, since hydrogen burns (or oxidizes) to form simply water vapor. Nothing else! No pollution! What a seemingly incredible advancement over our current internal combustion engines that put thousands of tons of pollutants into the Earth's atmosphere, and their many other environmental problems. However, Hydrogen is difficult to store because it has very low volumetric energy density. It is the simplest and lightest element - its lighter than helium. Hydrogen is 3.2 times less energy dense than natural gas and 2700 times less energy dense than gasoline. There are technical obstacles to a hydrogen economy – storage, safety and the cost of hydrogen and its distribution infrastructure. Hydrogen compressed to 800 atmospheres (also called bars) occupies 3 times more volume than gasoline for the same energy. It is necessary to reach this density if a vehicle is to carry enough hydrogen to be practical. A pressure of 800 bars works out to 6 tons, or 12,000 lbs, per square inch. It is very difficult to contain such pressures safely in a lightweight tank. Catastrophic tank failure releases as much energy as an equal weight of dynamite. A tank made of high strength steel weighs 100 times more than the hydrogen it contains. A truck or an automobile using a steel tank would be impractical as the tank would weigh nearly as much as the vehicle. High pressure hydrogen tanks made from carbon fiber may be a solution. Carbon fiber is a material used in aircraft and sporting goods. At the present time, carbon fiber tanks are very expensive. The Government is weighing all the pros and cons, but at present "cons" outweighs "pros", hence the delay!

We do think about fuel Sir, there are buses over flooded showing that there are people who believe in public transport as well. We are thinking about substitutes and will use them as they come up with equal capability as the crude oil.

Dear S Muralidharanji

I must thank you for such a great Article/Analysis of Hydrogen As Fuel..... Pros & Cons.. everything in detail............

Why do you think Hydrogen as Fuel for Automobiles only......... Think for Industries......... Thinks for Power Stations etc ........ where Weight is not a Problem........

Yes, Carbon Fibres & Recent Developments in Nano Technology can get us right Solutions............

Hydrogen gas has several issues to be cleared before it can be used as fuel in common life. Can we neglect its misuse by terror outfits ? Its better for space missions. Why to add headache to our security system ?

Hydrogen gas is indeed the future but a lot of work still needs to be done. Besides being environment friendly as there is practically no exhaust, hydrogen gas can be used with our existing engines without making major modifications.

Pals , Just to update you all . We have already gone ahead with development of enabling technology for using hydrogen as an alternative fuel . Indian Oil has a pilot dispensing station at Dwarka , New Delhi , which delivers CNG mixed with Hydrogen gas ,Called Hythane.

Also globally there are efforts being made to develop special materials to transporthydrogen through cross country pipelines . Onethe biggest hurdles in getting there is the very very small size of hydrogen atom ( Atomic no is 01 ) as compared oto other gaseous fuels like LPG( butane or isobutane) or CNG. Being so smallHydrogen can even leak thru the tiny pores on the  weldments or even the micro porosity in pipeline walls !

hope this information helps all in making all think  about  , how to resolves this ?

cost of such fuel or one time installment of such alternatives is very high and that doesn't means people are not moving to other alternative renewable or more safer fuel. the only issue is the growth is very less. Government should support all hybrid vehicle like they did once in Hybrid civic by cutting down the cost to around 14lakh from 20+ lakh by removing some taxes.. With the support of government a change can easily be seen.. People are educated, they know what are the things effect environment so they are tryin to avoid such thing. Only cost is an obstacle alteast for now.

Petrol as a fuel is no more considered as future fuel. Western countries already in advance stage of bio fuel.America successfully now producing Ethanol from sweetcorn. Ethanol is highly flammable & after combustion when comes in contact with oxygen in air it produces water. Thus there is no problem of environment pollution rather it gives water as residue. Hydrogen is an important constituent of ethanol.

There are so many reasons that why we don't think hydrogen as fuel...Most of the people think that hydrogen is dangerous if it explodes..so first of all this type of thinking has to be crushed and then bring the use of hydrogen gas..And for public transportation system also we can go for the Hydrogen gas...if better go for solar...

As India is fast growing country. I has seen in metro cites that about 70 % peoples has its own vehicle. Only one person is driving a four wheels which is wastage of money as well as environment pollution. Please think that when Crude Oil will finished what will we do, ..........................

Till we have enough of better substitute to petrol, the usage of petrol will have the dominant role.

 Thanks for the referral Ms.Mridula.

We cannot directly blame the authorities for not implementing alternate source, as the availability of same needs to be sufficient to sustain the daily increasing requirement of the public. If the demand does not match then again we have words ready to blame. Instead what if we have some change of rules to regulate the increasing number of vehicals on road.
