OUR INDIA HAS GREAT WRITERS LIKE KHUSHWANTH SINGH, ANITA DESAI, R.K.NARAYAN, AMBADAS SHINDE AND THEIR STYLE OF WRITINGS ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WHEN COMPARED TO FOREIGN WRITERS. INDIAN WRITERS HAVE ALWAYS GOT AN UPPER HAND IN WRITING STYLE BECAUSE THEY WRITE WITH SOUL AND HEART WHEREAS FOREIGNERS WRITE WITH STYLISH FOUNTAIN PEN. ITS BETTER TO PLAY DOWN FOREIGN WRITERS. THANKS FOR REFERRAL DARSHANA...

I agree with Darshana's views. Creativity is not country bound. Popularity/market presence is some thing different and these should not be mistaken as measuring sticks for CREATIVITY.

J.K Rowling is not the best in the west, but she is a hit. Thanks to the publishers and the promoters. Her book was a hit even before the launch. The marketing tactics were excellent. But we cannot say that Harry Potter is the best novel ever. May be we lack writers like Rowling, but have hundred times better writers.

India definitely has good writers. No one can forget the auspicious works of Mr Rabindranath Tagore to Nanden Nilekani, we have many good writers, its all about individual to individual perception.

Thanks Darshana for invite First of all, not only Indians but the rest of the world too is America-fascinated.Like Rich people, Rich Nations are also fascinating. We already have so many characters in our good old, say ancient Fairy tales who do the fiction and magic and many imaginative things that please kids but but these stories were never marketed/published/commercialized like Superman, HeMan, Spiderman. Also, Books of these stories are sold in the local market just for few rupees, while Harry Potters Books are much costlier and sold in Dollars. So its human nature to praise the costlier things.

India and its mythology are proof of the creative talent in our country and blood for generations. The tales of Harry Potter, and situations have been told by our grandparents in some form in a small story within a Mahabaratha or Ramayana, the 2 great epics. The fact that we need to focus on is that none of us take interest in our mythology, but when we see or hear it from a western source, we like it very much. Our authors may need to add a contemporary touch to our creativity and ma sure no one can match the imaginative skills that we Indians possess.

It seems that the questionar does not have the idea of literature of India. There are so many writers poets since ages in India in each and every language of India. One should understand the literary heritage of the country one's born in before hankering after every thing west.

Why we are comparing our writers with Ms. J.K.Rowling? She become famous only because of Harry Potter Series of movies that's all! It is pity to call that literature. Friends please don't criticize our writers, as to know them the brain is minimum requirement.

Hello Darshana,i think it may be not correct to compare Indian writers to JKR.absolutely no doubt that we have so many wonderful writers.normally any literary work will have cultural and geographical influence in writing which is appropriate to the area where writer lives.we too have so many similar concepts that JKR has got in our own writings.may be JKR is very popular as her works are in english language which has got broader base rather than Indian languages.

We don't have and will not have someone like Rowling as creativity, thinking independently is not our cup of tea.Right from the school the whole focus is given on cramming, mugging skills the one who leads the pack will outshine others.Looking at our education system what we studied in school newton laws in one class faradays in other produced it in exam as it was written in the book got away with it our job was finished then and there. The focus should be more on pratical learning rather than the theoritical approach. Coming to the book writers most of indian books are either a copy of foreign writer or it is been inspired by them for example one book named "Almost single" when you read it you get a taste of the "Sex and the city" except that the story is based in Delhi instead of Newyork, the subject of the rest books is either on indian politics or it would be a motivational book like who moved my cheese,Alchemist etc.

We have enough like Aesop Fables, Sindbad, Akbar's Birbal, Thenali Raman, etc. These contributions need to be made available in a modern format such as moving Cartoons, Graphic art style etc. These are treasure valued for developing young minds.

India's Epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata, with translations in almost all the Indian languages, including malay, sinhala, and other foreign languages are great hits of the past, present and future! Pancha Tantra was another hit! In a multi-cultural, multi-lingual country like ours, there are a number of literatures available of this magnitude in many languages. Since we do not understand a specific language where the works are not translated to a common language we all can understand, we perceive that the literatures are not available.

India do have good writers but the problem is our environment is too uncanny or irrational for a writer to have the culture to scale up his or her writing. First of all there is the notion of 'order' which the reader can associate with which is missing. Then there is non symmetrical development everywhere, so something written in some geographicaly dislocated area cannot be identifiable to a reader. Most of the fantasies are unrealistic and moreover if something written on some reality a knowledgeble reader will find the truth that this story happens due to goof up of the design of the environment and not due to anything else like chance. If something written about social sciences one finds that the authors lack the thorough learning, skill or dexterity to keep the international audience enlightened or to feel he spend value time reading the book. Value addition is very poor. Though we have exceptions like Sobha De and Kushwant Singh who stand outside the mainstream pack of Indian writers who are not of value creating type.

Nothing comes close to Indian writing. The story telling and writing from Vedic era to ‘Panchatatnra’ will never repeat in this age. My best wishes for your creative effort. I have written a small book in the caption “House Plans for Common man” which is popular locally. In fact, most of us love in writing in college days and slowly forget in work pressure.

India has rich history of great epics for all ages like pancha tantra that can capture kods minds more than the current authors but they are generally localised and does not have international acclaim they deserve. more over we ourselves look down on them

Today People wants to see more technical movies,so they are more interested in Hollywood movies rather than Bollywood.Bollywood movies are lacking the facts that hollywood has.I think the bollywood writers are lacking the imagination and brilliancy like J K Rowling has for Hollywood. We have less number of good writers in our B-town.
