The banking scenario in India has already gained all the momentum, with the domestic and international banks gathering pace. The focus of all banks in India has shifted their approach to 'cost', determined by revenue minus profit. This means that all the resources should be used efficiently to better the productivity and ensure a win-win situation. Various Private sector Banks and even in Public Sector Banks are into consolidations and aquisitions.

Would the banking industry in India face many mergers and acquisitions this year get opened up for more international competition?

In my opinion, India would see a large number of global banks controlling huge stakes of the banking entities in the country. The overseas banking units would bring along with it capital, technology, and management skills which would lead to higher competition in the banking frontier and ensure greater efficiency. The FDI norms in the banking sector would give more leverage to the Indian banks. Thus, a consolidation phase in the banking industry in India is expected in the near future with mergers and acquisitions gathering more pace.

I dont think that merger will take place in next fiscal. The oppose from the bank employees will have impact on the decision for political gain. off course the top management of various banks have  prepared themselves and are proactive to save their bank from the merger. The merger of private bank or co op bank may be easy but in our country the merger of public sector bank will be little dificult due to the unions and their political connections.

Yes, even i would say this is very much in pace and will & should happen in a country like Ours to grow with better pace in terms of economy and technically too. The M & A of banks is in talks from long time and am sure this will be implemented very soon somewhere from 2nd half of 2010. .. Thank you, Manish N

Cheers!!

I think Vikas has summed it up right.  More interesting in the Banking Sector is how Indian banks try expanding internationally?  Indian banks have now created a brand - They are Indian - Stable and strong.  We should leverage on this.  Innovation, scalability should be their hallmark - with emphasis on larger scale of operation.  While on this, I would like to know your views on which Indian bank can probably take a lead in this and reach top positioning?

Rashmi

There would be some mergers across the banking sector but that would be in the public sector domain.Banks like Federal Bank,UCO Bank,Dena Bank.......will be taken over by some big public sector bank.IDBI has already done its due diligence for a possible take over..PNB,BOB are on their way for due diligence...MNC banks in India will consolidate their position and remain cautious on account of the global meltdown in the recent past.

In my view, there could be one or two acquisition of private banks either by a Industrial house or merger with large private banks. Possibly, some SBI associate banks may merge with the parent but this also subject to RBI and Employees Union concurrence

Recently, I read an article in Economist, that there are 5 banks in USA are in the process of selling off their assets and this will have some implication in banking industries.

Overall, there will be minimum acquisition or merger during 2010, and this year will be seen as a reconstruction stage.

I do not think there will be many mergers in the Indian Banking industries with the exception of consolidation of SBI member banks. One or two private banks may be taken over by some industrial houses. Yes. There will be some mergers and some acquisition but not in larger number.

Most of the Indian Banks are fundamentally strong. In USA, there are five major banks reportedly in the process of sell off and this will have some implication in India.

Mergers and acquisitions of banking and other sectors will be there more. Indian banks are very strong fundamentally and are very grounded in nature. Public sector banks themselves are a huge brand with million customers from all profiles. Indian banks will be looking to merge the smaller Indian banks, thereby increasing their footfalls and area of operations in rural and untouched areas.

Foreign banks are very risky to buy , government will increase its FDI but is very watchful.

No .... not many ... only a few .. may be.

Becoz ... the process is being discussed and there is no hurry for mergers. Banks in India are not in a distress and there appears no issue to be concerned for.

Our political managers have said time and again that demand for mergers be best raised from the Banks itself. Barring IDBI-FederalBank issue, there appears not many such thinkings.

Further, the staff members of such Banks might require to be taken into confidence. This may take some time.

I dont think there would be good number of mergers in fy 2010-11.  There could be one merger from the Nationalised banks segment, may be 2-3 (max) from old gen pvt sector banks.  Because, the way Central government is handling this issue, it appears they are not so keen of giving momentum to this.  This fact can be cross verified with the latest news that almost all banks, except 4-5, are willing to recruit huge number of manpower.

It is not necessaryly going happen this year. Infact, the Indian banks are hopeful of becoming a global brand as they are the major source of financial sector revenue and profit growth. The financial services penetration in India continues to be healthy, which makesthe banking industry not far behind.
