The Ministry of Finance and the Finance Minister appear directionless.

Every now and then, throu IBA and RBI they are proposing "Mergers and Amalgamation" of existing Banks and now come up with 'such' proposal in the Budget 2010. In the past also they tried to float Local Area Banks (LABs) but abandoned such attempts.

Till recently, RBI banned Sahara NBFC from accepting 'fresh' deposits. RBI ordered, in the past, winding up of so many NBFCs and the process is going on. Now, FM proposes to confer Banking Licences to (some of ) the NBFCs. The budget proposal does not mention why such a proposal is warranted ( ? )

However, some apprehensions remain :-

---  What will be the Capital base of such Banks ?

--- May "black-listed" private Cos. and NBFCs be permitted to open Banks ?

---  May they follow compulsory Priority Sector Lendings ? etc. etc.

---- We have already some Private Banks .. what will the ownership pattern of such Banks ?

Srinivas thanks for initiating a good debate. I my opinion allowing the NBFC will help in having more innovative products. Compared to the banking sector the non-banking are having good products which people are attracted most. So letting them enter the market will benefit us in two ways one the cost of the product will decrease and will have more options for selecting a product.
