When android is compared with other open mobile platforms, which got huge hype in the market, the near competitor for android is LiMo, and it is already proven as some gaints in the mobile space joined LiMo after android's announcement. But the android platform has very good application framework, despite the slow running in performance. I guess all these open mobile platforms work in future in win-win play mode, instead of running for monopoly kind of business. The craze for open mobile platforms enabled nokia also to make symbian open.

Still there are so many open platforms are coming like Maemo, MeeGo... Actually the android used partial linux so few commands are omitted from the android and then one more thing is regarding the dalvik virtual machine actually the oracle has put a case on android that they r modified the javas vm and using... if the oracle pepole won that case means then the android ill get down in d market... r else they have to use another virtual machine.... Since the MeeGo is a joint product of Nokia Maemo+Intel Moblin...and most of d partners support this product like linux.org etc., this meego is completely opensource and it ill compete to android and wins in the next coming days....

LiMo Foundation is an industry consortium dedicated to creating the first truly open, hardware-independent, Linux-based operating system for mobile devices. Backing from major industry leaders puts LiMo at the Heart of the Mobile Industry and makes LiMo the unifying force in Mobile Linux. this will definitely be a competitor for android.
