Dear friends....

In a move that could hike mobile tariffs, the Centre announced steep increase in spectrum charges for all GSM and CDMA technology-based service providers, which will be effective from the next fiscal (2010-11). The new charges vary between 3-8 per cent depending upon the spectrum an operator holds.

So people do you think will this costly spectrum raise tariff ???????

Hi Sonal,

Your argument on both sides carry same meaning in the end.

CAPEX on 3G, including its spectrum cost will offset revenue from 3G.  So even though 3G by itself is not a money maker, the industry owners can use this as well as the proposed enhancement of 2G cost as a ploy to increase tariff,  without which further sustainabity of the business is doubtful.

I think the telecom operators will always yearn for more. The consumer does not face a risk of higher tariffs because competition will drive them down.  The operators seem to have opted for the more-efficient spectrum at a higher price. The The revenue potential of 3G is phenomenal for both voice and data, and has reached people before entering into the market.

So no worries people !!!!!!

As we all know when first mobile came to market what was it price and call rates....initially it  was Rs5/ min and all incoming call are chargeable (I think ppl won't have forgot the "Q" in front of BSNL office for connection)....and now it is less than a rupee......

Its applicable every where ...when a new technology comes to market it will be costly....and as days go on the price reduces....

No increase in call charges are seen!

Buying shop in prime location does not permit vendor to sell items above MRP.

Similarly, buying costly spectrum should not affect normal call charges.

To recover this cost, companies have to come-up with different business model keeping basic call/service charges unchanged.

Another important point to note is, not all operators have got the 3g spectrum.  These operators will continue to offer lower call tariff and drive the competition.

You are right, Sonal.

There is already rate war between major operators like Vodafone, Idea, Tata,

Aircel. Aircel is also getting good response in Maharashtra circuit.

So nothing to worry for customer.
