Today, all that has changed. Post the World Cup, the world knows a different South Africa; one where, crime was practically non-existent (at least during the World Cup), racial tensions seemed to have vanished as black and white South Africans united in cheering their national team and, wonder of wonders, apart from a few minor glitches, everything worked. And like clockwork!

As Delhi waits with bated breath to do a South Africa, it is tempting to speculate if it will, likewise, make a bid for some future Olympics, assuming we do manage to host the Commonwealth games success fully. The Delhi government seems to be toying with the idea, alright. Last Friday the papers were full of ads proclaiming from ‘Commonwealth Games to the Olympics’.

So friends, do you think Delhi will be like South Africa?

Dear Sudipta and others supporting YES:

Simply putting matters under carpet or living in unreal world or weighing with nationalism will not take us anywhere. Avoidance of truth can at best provide a moment of false happiness yet will in no way help get anywhere near to a course correction. Falsehood is a much bigger mistake than agreeing to a mistake in first instance and making all out efforts to correct for future.

Delays, Cost overruns, abandonment of several projects is a well known fact. Forget the numbers the organisors are talking about, even to cater to a quarter of that count a safe, edible food the kitchen should have been a reality six months earlier whereas it is still in talks even now and ........this is just one segment.

If we as Indians think to do, it will be more than SA. Let us do it, why do we all think about us so negatively.  We have experience in conducting these world class events; take examples of Asiad or IPL or Cricket World Cup.  It is time to keep our inhibitions away and think positive.

Definitely, Delhi can be better than South Africa. Although its a fact that their is corruption but we got to believe in ourselves, and we are proving in almost every field. Our national growth rate is a testimony to that,we come only second in the world after recession in growth. India has got the resources and if those are utilized judiciously we can prove better than anyone else.

I would think that Delhi would do better than SA, because India can present a far more exciting and colorful milieu. Also India is quite experienced in presenting such events e.g. the previous CWG, the IPL and so on.

Yes, why not. Even earlier, it had handled Asian Games fairly well.  World's II biggest airport commissioned much ahead of time. We have no dearth of talents  to conduct such prestigious events.  Infrastructure may be lagging behind  but can be put in place at right time.

Bureaucrats involvement to be minimal & they should act as facilitator & event management cos., professionals be out sourced. CM should personally monitor the progress on regular basis & intervene on bureaucratic delays & decisions.so that the project can be completed in time bound manner.

Delhi Govt. can earn good amount of money by hosting such events & bid for prestigious events like Olympics. We have a cost advantage over south africa in conducting such events.

No way considering how the CWG is built upon corruption and low quality who cares if it is a success. remember the WC brought hope to millions of kids and people, it stood for hope of a billion african people even before if started. the foundation of the CWG games is on such poor qualities, then will the games be so! pity politicians and people in screw up a once in a century opportunity like this. India is a sore loser because of them!

Ask the organisers the answer would be YES and even better they would say.

Ask the residents of city who suffer day in and out they would say Nonsense.

Weather or not they happen and Weather or not they can be compared.

The truth is in no way can be termed "ORGANISED", and on this front it is a one hundred percent failure and at best taxpayers money would get converted in color.

I am in complete agreement with you Aditya on the subject. Here unfortunately we try to do every thing like election in terms of time frame. Since no body is sure wheather he/she will be in chair. So we take long complete everything in the name of compleation but after one solid rain the whole face comes out that why we are different.

It is not a question of critcize anybody. Incase you are from Delhi see the condition to belive the mess we are in. A game with a budjet of 900 plus crores has gone upto 30000 crores and who are paying the Delhites.

It is easy to say things but it is difficult to analise. Who are benifitted indirectly the politician. Otherwise how can the false celing of the table tenis event has given away? How the shooting range in Gurgaon has been submerged and no roads to be seen?

Yash I am in total agreement with you. Lets hope games pass off without incident like road caving in, the roof of some stadia may not fall.

To talk about south africa and the way it hosted World Cup Football recently it will be a distant dream for us.

Pray to the God that some how or the other the games get completed.

Though I dont want to be pessimistic, it looks really very doubtful at this point of time, when most the stadiums are yet completed and ready even to host a trial.

Not at all. South Africa has improved itself far in the recent years in terms of infrastructure, bureaucracy and security and all these things are lacking in Delhi. So I think still there is lotof time of Delhi's becoming South Africa.
