India Launched  the chandrayaan-1, an unmanned spacecraft designed to map the surfaced of the moon.

Though the scientific benefits are obvious, much of dialogue surrounding the event emphasizes the launch’s impact on India as a brand- declaring that India “ has arrived” as a modern nation. However, detractors- both international and domestic –claim the US$83 million should have been spent addressing India’s internal social problems and poverty issues.

Of course a moon shot would enhance the Indian brand. Not only will it show internal and external audiences that India is more than just a perception of poverty but a leader in the high-tech economy. Just look at the subsidiary outcomes, technical innovation will occur in India with their involvement in space. One can only speculate who will be first to set up space stations on the Moon, India or China. Imagine the scientific spinoffs to the country that achieve this. Space is commercial now and the Indian brand must demonstrate that it is a country of complexity of history and modernity

India has been providing technical services for settelites and settelites launched by India are spinning revenues.

By heading to moon India "s capabilities in space are known to the world  wherein the image of brand India will improve.

Neelima with due respect,

Space programs earn billions of dollars to the country when brand is build and India launch satellites of other countries (India is record holder in sending maximum number of satellites together at one launch).

It is illogical to think that weaponry and satellites advancements are stopping India to improve lifestyle of people of India(Take example of US/Israel--If you distribute money to poor then they get short time relief not permanent freedom from poverty).

If India does not invest in weaponry system then one fine day countries like China or Pakistan will do what British did 350 years ago.

After that, We will again have to sit and pray to Almighty to send few Gandhis to bring us out of dependency--because you know--I am more than sure--people who cry foul against Indian weaponry system wont at all show their face in India surrenders to the enemy.

Remember this time Gandhis--Because British might had some humanity but Talibans wont.

The event has outlined India's expertise in the area of space science which was never in doubt considering the number of Indians working at NASA. Plus India has always been in the forefront of science

This is an important step taken towards a holistic development. This will not only place India in a league of champs but will also open doors for many other initiatives. Today Indians hold key positions in most of the high-ranked Organizations. Indians have been doing a lot in all the fields be it Medical, IT or any other sector. I do believe that still there is a lot left out which needs to be addressed first, but we should not wait for things to get cleared and then take another step. Its better that people from various sectors are trying their best to do a lot towards taking India in a different league. This launch has certainly increased the goodwill of India. I am proud of India

I cannot understand how it does not concentrate on improving the lives of its citizens rather than constantly investing in weaponary and space programmes. By bringing even a small percentage of its people out of poverty it would create a massive internal market - and thus generate wealth. I think the launch of Chandrayaan may improve its brand at home but not abroad

Comparing the Budgets of US ($16 Billion) and India’s shoestring ($700 Million) for these fields and the achievements what I would suggest is India should have done this before instead of deviating an ambitious space programme into Missiles.
Missiles are always Non Starters and never used in practical and costlier than sorties
