As i was going through the news in an online portal this news article made me to take notice as it was something which was relating my field and this was really an interesting article as global pharma firms making drugs for the Indian market may have to review their discovery and development programme, following a path-breaking discovery by top Indian and American scientists that India is genetically not a single large population.

Drug companies engaged in clinical trails could be worried as our research shows that many groups in modern India descend from a small number of founding individuals and in that sense a common drug may not be the answer, considering the genetic variation in the Indian population. But then till now we have been using drugs which were generic most of the time and they also had good results, and the drugs were working fine, but then after this recent finding by researchers is giving Pharma co's a hard time with their later stages of clinical trials.

Will India's genetic divide pose problems for Pharma co's in Future?

I think this new research that they are talking here is the research findings on the "Reconstructing the Indian Population History", the work, published in the latest issue of Nature, has medical implications for people of Indian descent. It is said that more than 3/4ths  of India’s over one billion people are burdened with genetic disorders. The study shows that Indians have been genetically different from other groups and this could be a major cause of recessive diseases. The incidence of genetic diseases among Indians is, therefore, different from the rest of the world.  So the drug makers may have to consider the genetic variation in the Indian population as the treatment for any disease will depend on the genetic profile of the individual.  So this will in a way pose problems according to me, would like to know other experts views on this matter.....

Lets not trap poor Indians. Instead put more efforts on optimizing/maximizing use available resources to take bumper crops.

No, I don think so!

Most drugs that are generic in nature are found in various formulations according to the company manufacturing them. Also it is been evident for a long time that Asians are genetically different from Europeans, Africans and others. How is it that drugs that are manufactured for people of these origins are similarly applicable for Asians/ Indians?

I guess this concept of differentiation in drug therapy would apply to very high-end drugs and that too only with respect to dosage. Given that all are genetically different, the dosages of these drugs might change as per response of the body system, body weight etc.  </p>
