Why not? IPL is such a huge tournament and the craze that it has generated in its first year shows that it has the potential to become one of the major sport tournaments around the world.

Hasmukh Saab aapne to IPL jasba dil pe le liye!

It’s too early to compare IPL with EPL, coz, EPL connotes football, which is in-fact popular World Wide. IPL on the other hand has to cover a long distance to share its forum with EPL.

Now the starry aspect, it’s a very valid marketing stunt to promote a craze which already exists in India and the Sub-continents, with the stars. Now all the stars are approached for advocacies like Dabur almonds hair oil to AIDS campaign. And this is Cricket, a pitch where all googlies are allowed.

Yes... if the strategy is right.

 1. regulate controversies about team selection, and the general opinion that its money-oriented

 2. brand the passion for the game. not the business.

 3. reach the market slowly...dont jump in...

 4. keep up innovations, dont copy EPL, Cheerleading and stuff like that!

if they dont do these... kaaboooom... IPL would die.

IPL has got the potential.

1. There is a huge fan following for cricket in many countries.

2. IPL1 has got a very high national and intl. TRP. Higher TRP is expected for IPL2.

3. IPL is a new thing and pioneer in bringing club culture to cricket. Whereas in football, there are many leagues. So IPL is expected to be more popular than EPL.

Yes it has all the possibilities of being as big as the EPL, EPL is mostly successfulll because football is a mass game and is followed all over the world but in the case of cricket only selected nations play this game, but with IPL it has garanered even more wide audience and its becoming more and more popular with US and China lately and in a similar way its spreading to other countries also, so Yes it has what it takes to be as good as EPL..

Definitely 100% sure.Let me tell you guys that I am a huge fan of EPL and following it from years and it is such a huge and popular football tournament that people all over the globe are emotionally attached to the teams involved in it.But talking about IPL i would say that IPL will not only match the frenzy of EPL,in years to come it will be the biggest tournament around the world in terms of audience, money and sponsorships.Although English premier league has been there from decades and IPL just have been started a year back but still i would say that it has and will continue to break all records in terms of viewership,Global acceptance, money involved etc.

I stand by Mr.Hasmukh's views.EPL is a very effective model and football is played almost all over the globe and Cricket is sensation mostly in Asia.IPL is more about glamour forget the hardcore cricket enjoyment.Players becoming puppet in the hands of wealthy actors and businessmen. This is more about hip-hop and less about cricket.

Sorry Shiuli I agree I got little carried away and thanks a lot for pointing it out. And yes, I do agree that it does not make any business sense to compare IPL and EPL. In terms of target audience, as foot ball is virtually a global game compared to cricket and also in terms of time factor as IPL is in its nascent stage....the real marketing potential can work itself out after few years.  But I do feel that this being a masala entertainment rather then sports in true sense of the term, the euphoria will die down soon. However, the world cup for twenty twenty appear to have very big marketing potentials in the time to come....

IPL has two facets. One as a product and other one as business model. I m sorry if I m an odd-mad out but I feel IPL, as a product, is exploiting the vulnerability of fantaticsm of cricket in our country. It is rediculous and defective model, but it simply is eye-catching as the word cricket is associated with it.  I find the product defective and honestly I feel sick whenever I hear or think about it.

I love cricket as much as if not more then anybody else in India. But what does IPL represent? If Indian team is playing with Pakistani team and Sachin, Dravid, Saurabh and Dhoni outplay Paksistni cricketers, then there is excitement, thrill and even pride. But what is IPL? I find it pathetically absured that many people are crazy about it. It is nothing else but glorified Ranji Trofee matches. I mean what is the fun or excitement if Sachin defeat Rahul's team or say Dhoni's team defeats saurabh's team? We, the people of India are taken for a royal ride. The foreign players, from whatever country are not earning as much from playing the official cricket in their country n for their country but make more money at our ididotic expense. Despite, crazy about cricket, I find it is an insult to our emotional intelligence. Kumble takes wicket of say Sachin, as an Indian cricket lover what I am supposed to do? Feel sorry or excited? Sorry...

Now, as a business model, let us understand one thing very clearly. playes are auctioned off officially...(sick) and few billionaire make a team by compbination of players various countries at astronomical prices. Please, let us understand, vry clearly, Muksh ambani or Shahrukh, or Shilpa or Preity are their to do business. They add glamous to attract more business. It has got nothing to do with game of cricket.

Lastly, I don't think this year people are as enthusiastic as in last year. The change of venue will also affact the revenue model. One can see desperate marketing efforts in the media to promote n talk excitedly about IPL but graph is going down for sure....

And lastly, no it can never replace or comepte with EPL. It has different logistics altogather. Most imprtantly, the craze for football is almost all over the world but cricket has fanatics in sub-continet only.....

I can't agree with Pragya on this Nobody can't emulate EPL...EPL was mainly successfull because it has fan following all over the world and if there are important matches against the Top clubs it is sure shot that most of them all over the world watch those matches, and moreover football is a mass sport, while cricket is a gentleman's game still, but with the introduction of T20 has brought new life and new audience for the sport but then to emulate the EPL like success it has a long way to go...I don't think it is possible..as cricket is not liked by all as that is the case of football, is liked by one and all...all over the world......and mainly it is short and cricket is too long...

I agree. The popularity and the audience that IPL recieved within a year of its launch is unbelievable and amazing. But i would also say that we should not start comparing it to a league which has been in existence from almost decades, let us give some time to see where IPL will reach in few years time. Will it be able to sustain the interest of people as the years go by.we have to wait and watch.
