Microsoft software giant will deliver a free Web version of Office, called Office Web Apps, that will launch in tandem with the paid, desktop version of Office 2010, which is in technical preview now and due to launch in the first half of next year.

Will Microsoft Office Web Apps Have Edge Over Google Apps? What do you say?

Actually I can't be completely on either side of this debate

why microsoft:

1. The delivery is through a mature system like SharePoint( which is SOX compatible and can fit seamlessly with Information Rights Management(IRM) & ERP systems. Moreover the aspects of traceability, archival and workflows comes along with the technology.

2.One must also note that excel web services are already available in MOSS.So it's already enterprise ready and tested.

why Google:

1. with announcements like the chrome OS and applications like wave ...Google may transform the meaning of OS and productivity applications altogether.

2.With governments taking a tough stand against closed source standards, Google & Open-office may find themselves automatically in a much favored position.

any ways, the end user has every reason to smile.May the best solution win

Maybe, but with OpenOffice and Google Apps have stolen the thunder and lead to market, they will give M$ a run for it's money. Moreover, I seriously doubt if Office Web Apps will truly be open source.

As far as office tools are considered, Microsoft has already its hands on the markets. Its not easy of Google or any other server to compete with Microsoft's well established market in terms of office tools...

"Moreover, I seriously doubt if Office Web Apps will truly be open source"

Did microsoft ever said, it will be an open source, it may be free... (dont knew for general user or for only those who bought licences of its desktop version) ... but whatever may be the case, I assume no big and sensible organisation in today competive environment be realing on google to store its document. Has this been the case then companies would have official mails on gmail not on Exchange servers.

With both online (Office Web Apps) and offline (Office 2010) versions are Office forthcoming. Microsoft's expansion of Office will be good for the industry and provide Microsoft with a worthy one-two punch. Web Apps may be a better fit for consumers and enterprise adoption of online apps will be slow, but the two worlds will blend eventually, and this is where Microsoft will have an advantage over other Web-based alternatives.

And the other challenge for Microsoft will be to avoid cannibalizing sales of its own lucrative desktop productivity suite.....

Have any one tried using the complete google apps? u won't use anything else.. The ease of use, the less "Minimum requirement" and the cost factor.. all these will help google.

Ps. The heading should have been Ms Office Vs. Google Docs. Google Apps is a set of applications and google docs is a part of it

I really doubt that microsoft entering into web apps now will really scrap google apps.. Google has dominated the internet space, through its innovations and its free for all approach. even if the MS web apps come into picture,it will still be costing something or the other. Well, i really dont know whether it si free or paid, but one thing i know is that no one has dominated the web like google, and someone trying to take google heads on in this space - need to be strong enough...
