No sir, Open Source will never took over the licensed products. No Open Source project have survived more than 2 years:(. Corporate users will never go for a product which doesn't have long time span. What the open source projects lack is the ability to see the total picture. They have good core things but the very important aspects (like after sales support, assurance of continued support for longer period) is missing. Whom do you call when you have a problem with Open Office? And please don't tell me there is thousands of volunteers out there to help you. general people do not have the time for reading 1000 page manuals and go through the endless listings in Forums. The sooner the Open Source people realize that everyone is not a Student who have ample time for these, the better.

The vision behind the launch of chrome os is to push forward the 5th gen of computing. Its like saying the "internet of things " and this is what exactly google is trying to do .Even they know it well that chrome os will not replace traditional operating systems on desktops and powerful laptops. But thier product will make people live their lives online more because of the advantages of better speed ,security etc..... One thing is for sure we are heading for a change in our mindsets by the way we use computers .things that cannot be done online will surely be demanded by users because the product (chrome os ) will compel them to do so .Who doesn't want a 5-6 sec boot up netbook, with all the worlds security in it ?And here in comes the role of the open source developers , . This wouldn't have been possible if google hadn't worked upon Webkit, opengl , V8 etc.. i mean the underlying technology is completly open source and google is great at working with it . Certainly , thing like VIDEO EDITING SOFTWARE /PIC EDITING SOFTWARE MIGHT JUST BE AVALIABLE ON THE WEB and will run exceptionally well on chrome os ,talk about gaming Nivivd is working hard something called as reality server which will deliver 3D gaming experinece to simple computers just having a web browser and a cpu. The trend is clear , everything that can happen on the desktop ,Google has challenged and created the infrastructure of making it happen on the web ,to supplement the experience devices like android and chrome os will surely add to the overall connected experience which we all a part of already.

We should be worried about features and dependability and not the riches of Bill Gates here. It is going to be either google or microsoft which will become richer and we should be happy to get more choices.

I would not say that Microsoft OS will be extinct, it takes something much more than Chrome OS to make the legendary Windows which dominates more than 90% of the computers across the world, but surely looks like it will be real battle interms of who gets the bigger chunk of pie....and I am on this side mainly because I love each and every google product till day, so hoping Chrome OS will also be great one....

Both have their own market dominance, and we as a user welcome this. i don't think there is a Q of extinction. we have to see things in a big way.

Microsoft won't sit down and watch their profitable market get down.We are speaking about Microsoft here.Moreover. for Chrome to succeed , good internet connection is needed, which i suppose in india only available in metros.Around the world, the amount of security details that people want,Chrome has a long way to go to get tested and hacked, before getting accepted.

Google Chrome will take market share from ubuntu & other variants of Linux, not from Windows. From current reviews Google Chrome seems a toy, not a tool. Only the System Admins, Hobbyists will try out this innovative OS but general mass people will shy away from it. Frankly, people do not have that much time to waste on learning a new OS concept. Windows is stable, secured and gets the job done. BTW: by saying "gets the job done" i mean that it remains out of the way when I do the work on the Applications. An OS needs to be stable, secured, easy (read familiar). It is not a search engine where a glitch/mistake in the system will not harm you much. MS, Apple, Sun etc took ages to stabilize their OS. This will take time. You have to wait that. If you have tried Google Wave recently, you will understand that recently Google is spending more time on useless innovation than on real things. I am sorry to see them engaging in unnecessary battles which they will lose.

Google will fail to attract the most lucrative segments. It will have the same fate as other The Open Source projects, lots of media attention and silently go out of the scene. Google is heavily relying on the Internet for their OS. It may be true for some countries but most of the population is yet to have a stable, fast internet. So, the old, isolated OS concept is still valid and dominant. No way people will embrace an OS which will not have the ability to serve all people. MS succeeds because everyone can use their products, where the Google OS will require the Net and some advances knowledge (ya it's true).

With the Chrome operating system, Google is not trying to build a better version of Windows. Instead, it is aiming to shift users toward its vision of “cloud computing,” a model in which programs are not installed on a PC but rather are used over the Internet and accessed through a Web browser.

I don't think Google OS will be a big blow for Microsoft. It will make a difference in the home market, that's sure, it could be even bundled with some laptops (BTW, where have all the manufacturers that tried to ship Linux instead of XP/Vista gone????). But let's remember that Microsoft real power is licenses, which means Business (from SME to Enterprise). Google OS has first to answer some questions? 1- How does it integrate with Active Directory? 2- How does it conform to seamless (Windows) authentication? 3- How about security (there another argument on this)? 4- How about support? 5- Will it support Office? The ideal situation for Google would be: Everyone in a company using Chrome OS, with a Chrome AD (????) using the likes of Open Office. Now, who will pay the transition? What is the ROI? What other server components does it offer (like Chrome-SharePoint, Chrome-BizTalk, even Chrome-SQL just to name some).

Time to distinguish between OS for enterprise and fun. Individual systems shipped with Linux get invariably formatted and loaded with Microsoft OS. This reality is proof enough for its superiority and dependability. It is welcome to have competition and especially from Google which will make future OS much more reliable and secure.

No it wont. There are infinite number of things Google needs to do. Chrome OS will be good for netbooks but not for rest of the computers or laptops. But definetely Google might eat away some part of the Microsoft's Cake.... And more over windows 7 is very good....

Eventually people will want reliable software to work with and when it comes free it is an icing on the cake. Open source will take over licenced software but windows will never go into extinction. There are too many who are hooked onto windows, even MacOs. So, while Bill Gates might have to relinquish is place among the super rich, Microsoft will be around for awhile. Google Apps will sure give Microsoft a run for it's money - Windows extinction in my judgement is a little far fetched.
