Opening new IITs and IIMs by the Govt. under the 11th plan should be a welcome step. Everything has a got a beginning. Even the present reputed IITs and IIMs had a small beginning, but grown to world standards with ease due to the system of education and dedicated faculty teaching to a top cream of students. This success story has to keep going for the benefit of the country in terms of knowledge capital and its optimal utilization.

Anil, your logic sounds same like government: If 7 IITs and 7 IIMs can have such a big impact, then why not we have 7 more for each? Than please have a thousands of each. I pity on that. Announcement about new IITs and IIMs by human resources minister is total rubbish which will degrade the quality & talent retrieval. If practical aspects are ignored, the new IITs and IIMs will definitely suffer. And that is not good news for anyone. I was perhaps humored by the government’s decision to extend IIT and IIM brand as never done before by any government in Indian history.

Definetly Yes,becoz on a ture node only these two institutes maintains highest level of education in India.Indian Govt.should look into the matter of brain drain and try to keep the bunch of talents here only so that they can serve their own country by providing the best possible platform, environment and pay scale.

Dear Friends

With the growing population and large country area where every state is like a country under world scenerio and with the increasing demand of knowledge and to phase the more and more new challenges - establishing of new IIMs and IIT is an excellent step . We all should welcome it. We should also continually improve and upgrade by that standard.

opening more IITs  and IIms can have positive effect.  The screening tests standardised can impart the the students with meraculous aptitude for the above courses which makes easy to impart knowledge and deliver necessary intellectual transfers to the students cirriculum.

On the other hand if we force such cirriculum on students who r not intrested in such cirriculum will be forced to withdraw from their studies.

Further to establish such iits mere Land and money is not sufficient, necessary infrastructure, faculty are also important.

Infact every expansion is either based on  its need now or in future, if we consider global aspects of development, lets accpet the fact that we do need more and more quality, though we often see brain drain too but i think cummulatively we'll have people with us too, as development is pervasive to all its parts and progresses in state of diffusion,

to the fact indian society has started to accept the importance of education, and has started to get fruits, in my views we gonna need more and more infrastructure for our future and that makes a real sense

I don't agree with you, The government feels that increasing the number of IITs and IIMs will add to the number of executives and tech wizards that the country needs and beef up its presence in the scope of research. And that India thus would be set to take on the world, especially China, by producing enough managers and software pros for the next decade and also marching ahead in the area of R&D where the Communist nation always seems a few steps ahead of us

With the increasing literacy rate as well as growing competitiveness backed by increased professional/job avenues, setting up more IIT and IIMs is the step in the right direction. It shall provide the higher level of professonal management and technical education / research opportunity to the deserving candidates.

But the research standard, candidate quality, educaton standard and impartiality/independence of these national institutons shall not be compromised or diluted.

Think about the number of good engineers we have in India and think about the area where there is a large gap of requirement. I hope there is a large gap between the supply and demand. since there is no supply we try to mange the show by using the avaialable resources. If the resources availalble are a class apart then the quality of the services and good will improve which will make us to grow further and further. A good engineer with good mnagement makes an impact around them atleast  to 10people. Thisis the starting point of change to growth.

If we plan expansion correctly and with the right value systems there is no reason why we cannot maintain high standards in all new IITs or IIMs. And not only more people will get the opportunity to have a better education but also the economy of our country will rise as there will be more students coming in from abroad to study here.

Increasing the quantity of IIMs/IITs does not lead to improving quality of education...Focussing on the existing bunch of tier-II/III/IV/... institutes to improve their quality of education should be the need of the hour...You are just rubbing away the sheen of the brand that comes along with IIMs/IITs by creating more number of such insts...in my opinion it does not augur well for the quality of education system..Man, you got to attack the root of the problem why the education system is failing to align itself with the reqts. and not live in a fantasy land wishing that the system will improve by creating more no. of IIMs etc...jaago govt. jaago...

What benefit it is to develop whole new institutions? Why don't the existing colleges (many thousand of them) look at IITs and IIMs try to implement changes necessary so that they are as competitive? Obviously piggybacking on already established brand name is what this is all about. If the formula to build an IIT/IIM is already there, it should be shared with all Engg colleges and challenge them to do better.

Well, just increasing the numbers of IIT's or IIM's wil not improve the education fields, only quality education will improve the instituitions.

Since these institutions are nothing but another educational institutions, I feel that adding IITs or IIMs will not improve the educational fields.

Another thing is that the students of these colleges aspire mainly to go abroad I believe, hence  it will be beneficial for other countries only.

IITs and IIMs of present day India will never help India develope rather they are quite an asset for the development of US and European First World countries because the most powerful motivation in the IIT and IIM campuses are Job Guarantee (Maximum Security) and the package that is quite unmatchable in part of other such institions.

Almost all the IIM and IIT campuses lose the components of moral grounding, committment and dedication for the nation. If these components are infused among the youth of India, then not only IIM and IIT students but every youth will be an asset for the country. And, in fact, everybody is equally essential for the alround development of India.

In my opinion instead of opening an IIT at every corner, the smarter solution to bridge the educational gap in the country would be to go digital. Establish an e-IIT & IIM where thousands of aspiring students could access quality education through distance learning. On the same lines, tele-medicine and mobile 'Nano clinics' could change the face of rural healthcare. This way I am sure the system will imrpove....
