In a recent news, in the wake of strengthening security in the country, India is changing its visa norms and have tightened its rules. The home ministry has tightened visa regulations in the wake of multi-entry visas given to Pakistani-American David Headley and Pakistani-Canadian Tahawwur Hussain Rana, both arrested in the US for plotting terror attacks against India and Denmark.

The new visa regime has prompted criticism from the United States and Britain. Minister of state for external affairs Shashi Tharoor has questioned the tightening of visa regulations in the backdrop of the David Headley case and asked whether India would allow terrorists to make it a "less welcoming" destination.

Do you think the new visa norms will help in preventing terrorists entry in the country?

Shashi Tharoor made quite a sensible comment. Visa procedures are already a big headache for 99.99% who travel. Why make them more cumbersome? And visa regulations are always reciprocal: if we make them more stringent our citizens will also face problems travelling to other countries. Immigration and customs, in my experience, are one place where government misuse of its powers is in full play.

I would like to agree to this only partially.  This is only a half measure taken because as correctly pointed by Mr. Tharoor 26/11 terrorists didnt have visas !! We surely can revisit the visa norms but have to walk on thin line while implementing such restrictions to make sure that it doesnt have negative impact too.  Moreover along with this coastal and border securities need to be tightened further.  Hope Nandan Nilekani's UID will somehow help in tracking and identifying illegitimate inflow.

I believe the new norms can help in reducing the amount of terrorist entry in the country. The new rules will keep a regular check up in every foreigner and their activities in our country thus preventing any big attacks like 26/11

new Visa norms will not do much than creating more hassels for the common man. As far as terrorists are concerned they will always find the corrupt officials to bribe and get away. By the way, going by the news article Tahawur rana the other guy got his visa without proper background check which is required as per the rules which are in place since 2004.

The only way for India to fight terrorism is increase the patriotic feelings within our country men, who are corrupt and for sake of money help terrorists, 26/11 ...terrorist did not had visas, they had more than that...the helping hand of our corrupt fellow country men.Try to stop/reduce corruption and terrorism will stop automatically....make everyone feel the same love and patriotism for our motherland and terrorism will stop.

Nirmal, what major concern our country is right now having is corruption, Mr.Tharoor rightly said 26/11 terrorist had no visas but they had more than that, and that was the helping hand of our fellow country men, who for sake of money allowed these terrorist to enter our land, making visa procedure more strict will never help us counter terrorist movements in India. As many of Indians(residents) are directly linnked with terrorists, how can we trace them. Outsiders can never enter our home unless and otherwise they are helped by the family members. So I think visa procedures shud not be made more strict.

I don't think visa the new norms will prevent terrorist entry in the country. This is not the way to prevent the entry of terrorists in the country. They can enter even without Visas. As Mr Tharoor pointed out, 26/11 killers had no visas. They may come in any way. Terrorists don't need visas to enter our country...
