Will not huge spectrum cost kill the 3G business in India?

3G, not being a very spectrum efficient technology, Service Providers will have to struggle

to make 3G business viable in Indian situation especillay with the current 3G broad band product plans.

Telecom 3G Mobile handset and Equipment / Software Vendors have come up with Megabit and

multi-megabit product ideas that are going to put pressure on the spectrum needs.

What we need to quickly spread the wireless broadband foot print in the country are mulimedia products

that are available, accessible and affordable for the comman man across the country, most of these

could be managed with data speed of just 384 kbps. Hope the Service Providers will take a fresh look,

in their product plans accordingly.

Over and above these inherrent business snags, Government's decision to sell 3G spectrum by

auction starting with a heavy floor price is going to kill the industry as a whole.

To lessen the problems of a difficult industry, Government

should have given out 3G spectrum at a subsized cost in a

revenue sharing mode as it is also in the interest of the nation

that cheaper broad band wireless network coverage is made available

across the country.

I would request members to have a look in my earilier postings on

"Limitations of 3G" and "It is not right to sell out radio spectrum"

in this community space.
