Microsoft Office 2010, the successor of Office 2007, is ready to be released in June 2010. But, the market scenario won't be like the one what Office 2007 faced in late 2006 when the availability of Google Apps, Zoho tools and IBM’s free productivity software, Symphony were limited. Also, the OpenOffice.org from Sun Microsystems had various compatibility issues at that time. But, now things have changed.

About 80% of enterprise customers are still using some version of Microsoft Office for worker's productivity and collaboration, however only 8% are using various alternatives, which include Sun StarOffice, Google Premier Apps, Lotus Symphony and Zoho.

So I want to ask you people how Office 2010 will combat Google Apps in the cloud?

I think Yes. Microsoft 2010 will be able to combat Google in the cloud. Microsoft is aware of the growing threat from Google, and will counter it in Office 2010. Microsoft office 2010 gives rich and powerful new ways to deliver best work by offering more ways to access files from virtually anywhere. Office 2010 puts in control all the time. The new productivity suite will include Web-based versions of its most commonly used applications, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote for the first time. It will be available in 64-bit version, however only for Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating system. Office 2010 is not supported on Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. The Office productivity tools are no stranger to competition, but the new web based competitors are new to the application suite.

It's been a long time since I've been awe struck by the quality and ease of use of any Microsoft product. My Notebook lost it's hard disc late last year and whilst my data was up to date the hassle of installing all that software was painful. Some apps, especially all the Google apps, though did clever things that made my job easier. All the Microsoft apps had either minor or major (BCM for example) irritations. This experience told me that the market leader is going to have trouble. The bottom line is that the smarter grads want to work for Google and that has been the case for a number of years and it is now showing up in the quality the consumer experiences.

While Google Apps will do well, the base for Office is so large that the incentive to switch won't be strong enough to get users to change platforms.

The corporate communities though will continue Microsoft products for all practical purposes. Home users will shift to Google Apps.

i tried google office too. i agree that there will be no compatibility issues as well. As u said leena , microsoft is trying to win backthe customers, i feel dat they'll work hard on office 2010 to rule out the other products. I'm also waiting for the office web app word.

Leena did you tried MS Office 2010 Web Apps? I tried zoho, and google office. I can definitely say Office 2010 will rule out them, since there will be no compatibility issues in Office 2010 under windows and Web Apps under Cloud. Also waiting for the hero 'Office Web App - WORD' for its preview. They are working very hard on it.

Google apps is free... and though previously u needed an internet connection (tho now net is not an hindrance in an emerging country like India), they have now come up with google offline. So piracy is not an issue anyhow.. The fact is home users will have both MS office and Google apps... but the usage will slowly increase for apps... Talk to any teenagers and they will say using google is the in thing now.. and people always follow whats fashionable.

In the last two years, Google poses a major threat to Microsoft's Office market share. Google is offering its advanced functionality Office @ $50 per user, per year especially among small businesses. Google Apps is presently used by thousands of business users, but, the company has also been serving major enterprises, like Motorola, Genentech and Sabic formerly called GE Plastics. Now with Office 2010, Microsoft is trying to win back the customers that are presently using Google Apps and also retain its Office desktop users, which are considering for Web-based application. I don't think Office 2010 will be able to combat Google Apps on the cloud.
