As there is so much said and done about employees performance at the organization, and then there is a debate going on whether layoff's are actually a companies strategy to remove the non-performers, but in the Employer's point of view he wants his every Rupee spent on you to be worth it, so in this sort of scenario at an organization where there is cold war that is happening between the Employer and the Employee, where employee thinks that he is underpaid, and where the employer thinks that it is more than enough what he is getting for his work, So my question is will People work more if they are paid more? This i guess will be most debated if one puts forward such question, So what are your views on this

Definitely 50% of us work for money and yes, I do. Certainly but no one have straight forward answer for this. I’ve yet to come across a person who says he will not work more if he is paid more. The important thing is we all do have a bad habit of comparing salary packages with those their neighbors.

Practically it doesn’t make any sense. Based on performance monthly perks will be given. This will improve the performance and good/healthy competition between the team mates. Thus, we work more if we are paid more……..people who are all working in big MNC could say no to this but its not true coz they have a nice package. And am not blaming them coz they are working and they are paid for that. Think about small and medium size companies…

No people will not work more if they are paid more, they are not machines where one controls them saying i ll provide more power start working for me, it doesn't work out like that, if one is having conflicts at the workplace not having proper ties, they'll not work, So no one will not work more if they are paid more...

As a matter of fact, those who are in need of money will definitely fall for this equation. People who work overtime and earn money for the extra man hours is one such example.  This may not seem attractive for those who are capable of meeting both ends with the perks and compensation they receive. Nothing can substitute money and it inspires the needy!

I have no experience regarding this but I write this after certain observations made by me.This argument is mostly valid for freelance consultants who get paid according to the clientale and for this one has to put in more number of hours at work to satisfy the clients. With all due respect, the employees in the government services may come under the situation of not working extra time for money because of the type of payment policy, but people in the other services,in today's world may not have the guarentee to stick on to their jobs and also to expect money to flow once they decide to retire. So forgetting about being politically right, I would say that people would want to have that extra earning especially when they are in their prime ages of working capabilities to lead a secure future.

Yes thats a human nature when we get something extra for same work then we put extra efforts into that work. And every one work for money so when you get extra money for same work .naturally people start to contribute their efforts more into that particular work.

yes ofcourse, people do their job just because they are paid and that is the prime criteria for which they are there and for not any reason, and yes one will work more if they are paid more. See money pays all those bills right??

According to me i think, irrespective of the cold war that is happening in the workplace, when one says you'll be paid more, one will think twice about the deal, and if he has nothing against his boss or where his ties are good with the company, i think one will accept the offer, may be many will not agree with me, but then if they are paying more one has to work more.

I strongly contradict the idea that people work more if they are paid more. High self motivation, longing for recognition, challenging work environment and a lot of various other factors influence people at work. Since  no individual exhibits unique behavioural traits, naturally they differ in their performance levels. Monetary benefits fulfil emotional needs only at certain extent but can't influence the human abilities and productivity levels.

more money without a value system in place and motivational leadership culture would have a low ROI people taking the money and yet leaving like people accepting money in a corrupt democracry and voting for the other party as we keep hearing,  while with less money and only emotional treatment people will say goodbye with a proud thank you as we are no more in the culture of a joint family system where people stick to their native place and relatives around with connectivity having improved in terms of travel and communications while there are always companies that pay much better in the age of globalisation and competition - retaining people and making them do wonders needs allround 360 degree motivation in terms of love, care, infrastructure, personal growth+ more money than the competitors enabling them care for the family and enjoy life without feeling meagre in terms of supply of allround resources for a quality of personal life at home with a secure future at a faster rate with freedom to leave the job and do something on his own too as a possibility.

More money may not mean more productivity but could delightfully retain people with emotional motivational needs taken care of and other essentials as mentioned, and retaining people could mean company growth an indicator of company productivity interestingly to argue around.

Money is something Human being is never satisfied with. The craving never ends.

At first People will work like machines for the more money offered.over a period of time he/she starts thinking that the rate /output ratio is insufficient and yearns for more.consequently the machine starts slowing down ,work satisfaction is lost (because its not work that satisfies it is the Money)

As long as human being works on a interesting angle (money matters and should be balanced) the performance at work is naturally sustained and improved. If its Money that leads performance definetly lags.there are no two thoughts on this aspect.

Not all, and even if some people work they won't sustain for long time. The thing is, human nature is such that he may become money minded in the beginning. But in the long run, he would be preferring better work environment more than money. Majority of the employees would prefer job satisfaction over money in the long run....

In my opinion anyone joining an organization today or even in the past knows what he or she is going to be paid and what is expected out of him or her in return. I have never come across any such case where once you have joined you decide how you will work irrespective of the salary you are paid.

I disagree that people work better if paid more. It has been my experience that beyond the basic living expenses (will differ by person and his circumstances), more money is only a status or prestige or peer pressure. Many excellent workers I know have been working and working hard irrespective of their compensation comparision with their collegues. The prime mover for good work really is the "internal connection" the person finds for the work and the monetary satisfaction of his real needs. Just ask yourself - will you work more if you are paid more and sacrifice that vacation with your family, your parents 60th birthday celebrations, your child's prize?

Not necessarily. However, people will definitely work less and look for income elsewhere, if they are not paid their just remuneration for the work they do and the responsibility they take.

Let it be in the Indian context first.

Hardly you may find satisfied with his or job today as repeatedly doind the same work leads to loss of interest as the promotion aspect will tend to minimise the intersts.

Here comes the job diverification........

Else every one find in a cobweb........

Everyone does the work for which he is meant that does not mean if I am paid more I will strat that work for which i am not meant.

If I am paid more I get motivated but prtior to that i a feel honoured and privileged if Recognized before everyone.

I find my efforts being recognized.

a scene :::( from an english movie)

employees working like a conveyer belt with sacks covering their heads with two hole for eyes ::

the second in the chain staring at the feet of the first one :: and so on & so forth::( FILO :: LIFO ::)

if you want permanent , efficient s....employees :::

golden rule  :: instil fear in their heads :::

and make them work continuously ::: never let them think :: take their intelligence to their feet::

this model :: used in  :: coal mines :: tea estates :; marble mines ETC. , ETC .  , on foot soldiers( by erstwhile kings also just poke history)

they don't talk , just work as if under a hypnotic spell ::

if this business model  is successful there , can be replicated else where too:;

just mind food ???

I dont think so!!

Sales: People depend on the gratification that they get after the targets are crossed and not on the acrual in hand package! Here if the package is increased without increasing the incentives and the target bars!! HUGE MISTAKE :)

Marketing: People here have spend a lot of time and money before they undertake tasks that are mental and is like living life on a chess board!! There aspirations are more package based than incentive based. So it is quite expected that higher the pay package more the time to be spent in the boardrooms and on the chess board!! :)

Other verticals I am not so savvy so please excuse!

In short, it cannot be such a communitative property. This is not an equation of equals to. Its all about the output against the paid out made! Anyone who realises this will be practical to deliver what is expected not a penny more not a penny less!!

I complete disagree with this statement that people work more if they are paid more. Because I had observerd my seniors they used to predict that the work hard and carry forward the work of juniors by diminshing the work done by juniors. Though Money is motivating factor if the person had worked hard.

Basically, the person works hard if he/ she has passion and the interest towards the work. Person are paid more when they have many yrs of experience. So, hard work of a person cannot be calculated with the salary he is getting, it can be calculated by the efficiency, revolution and appreciation made by others.

More Money = More Responsibility

More Money = You can't say NO to multiple task

More Money = You work 24 x 7 for an organization

More Money = More chances of getting fired if something goes wrong

If somebody is working with all the risk factor said above for less money, Is he/she not wasting his capabilities time and calibre.

I think it is not to get overpaid but the salary should be justified for what your roles and responsibilities are.

The answer should be NOT NECESSARILY. As we read in the basics of Personnel Management that motivation varies from person to person and his stage to stage.

What is the baseline to define 'more' working? How can it be measured? Money is important.. It can be motivating.. but money alone can't result in getting everything out of an employee.

Money is a pre-requisite to get your material needs satisified. But money does not work always. Many a times the renumeration is handsome but the demotivating factor could be the attitude of the boss, non-conducive physical environment etc.

No, Money is one of the needs to satisfy. As per utility theory of Economics too. After a certain Income. personal leisure takes over Income.

The last 7 yrs of experience have told the same thing to me. But above all you should create your own value which can nnot be measured in terms of money.

Jayashree i agree with you that money is an important aspect to keep ourself motivated towards our work but don't you think so that if people are paid more than they deserve then instead of compensating it by doing more work they will take it for granted and start doing lousy work.

what do you think?

No...!!!

1. Absence of Money  - Leads to Demotivation

2. Sufficient Money - Avoids Demotivation

3. More Money -  Not a Source of Motivation Either

Only Recognition/ Growth / Work Culture/ Challengin tasks etc are Motivators...

I agree. No quality job can be obtained without proper remuneration.Because for perfection in work we have to spend our energy, time and also money. If we are ready to put forward or ready to work hard why should we not to expect good remuneration. Money alone is not important. I agree, but with out money what we can get in this ecomic world. Therefore my conclusion is that good experience, education, perfection and sincerity should be supported by good remuneration
