I think Google's slow entry puts it in the position which Yahoo has held for years in search: behind the leader, always playing catch-up instead of spending creative energy on new advances. Google has always struggled with social content, producing mixed results. Orkut, for example, is a hit in Brazil & India, but not in other major markets........

Basically it is a YES & NO.Yes in the sense google has to concentrate more on applications, rather google itself has to take on the role of a sort of Internet OS ,by cementing not only google applicationsbut also hosting indenpendant app developers, like an open source both on PC&PDA front. How micosoft revolutionised PC usage in early 90s and made it popular as a communication device instead of a computing device ,Google will be doing a similar killer application/role in Internet by taking WEB3.0 to the next levels/generation.

There is a decent article with toostep which explains about real time web, i think it will help understanding real time web more precisely as a web technology. http://toostep.com/insight/introduction-to-the-real-time-web Real-time information delivery is fast emerging as one of the most important elements of our online experience. No more waiting for the Pony Express to deliver a parcel cross-country, no more waiting for web services to communicate from one polling instance to another. This is information being available to you at nearly the moment it's produced, whether you're watching for it or not. Just this afternoon, Google declared real-time search to be one of the biggest unsolved challenges it faces. This morning the NYTimes put a link to a new real-time view of all its news stories on the front page of its site. Last night Facebook announced a new feature that will let users be notified instantly when their friends interact with media related to themselves on the site. This is big stuff, but what does it all mean? We offer below a collection of readings on the real-time web. Give these articles some time and you'll have a solid foundation to understand, discuss and act on this emerging paradigm. "Instant Messaging" as the Foundation of the Future of the Web Could Instant Messaging (XMPP) Power the Future of Online Communication? In January of 2008 we looked at enterprise collaboration suite Jive Software and the company's belief that the Instant Messaging technology XMPP could serve as a foundation for the future of a real-time web. In that article we explained that just like AJAX has made web pages instantly responsive to clicks, without having to request a whole new web page from the server, an IM-style web could radically speed up collaboration online. If implemented well, it could make for a much more pleasing user experience, too: who would want to go back to a web without the responsive web pages that AJAX has enabled? Jive pointed to a number of examples of companies using the open-source real-time technology XMPP, including Tivo.

real time web is not practically possible ::: first we have to define real time and then proceed further :: real time architecture is based on eternal functioning of the machine and the end user :: even if we 24*7 power , computers are up all the time :: the end user will not be :: AS machines are not using machines but humans are ,who are biologically controlled and are not yet mechanised>>>

I would say first the comparision is wrong you can't compare a web technology with a web giant company like google which rather extensively uses web technologies like real time web. I think you have taken the consideration of google explicitly as a search engine company which in my opinion is incorrect, google has not limit itself to only search engine work it has rather made search more user oriented and along with it google launched multiple products other than search engine which are milestones in user rich experiences and web 2.0. Web 2.0 or realtime web is all about making web more interactive full with user rich experiences and on real time and this is what google is doing apart from search engine buisness, most of the web based projects from google represent real time web even some of them are future of real time web with extensive user rich features. Google always supported the open source web technologies and languages which actually has made real time web feasible like ruby, python, AJAX, and if you see the past projects of google you will find google actually introduced real time web to world by providing initial platform and support. The actual beginning of web 2.0 by google happened at time when real time web was just introduced to the world, considering some of current projects which are based on real time web are google apps, google maps, orkut, google groups, google blogs, igoogle a user customized search page, Opensocial for social networking some upcoming projects like wave that google is going to release in near feature if you see the concept of wave you will find it is the biggest implementation of real time web, it will be integrating all the different sections of real time web it will be a social network, a collaboration tool, knowledge base, a buisness playground and many more its full capabilities are yet to be explored and i think wave will rather give real time web a new dimension. In my opinion future web (Including real time web ) would be dominated by google.

Don't think so, Google is industry leader in the web search, email and new Web 2.0 based technologies and it is well supporting on the same. Also it has growing database on the email and personalization is providing. Google is lack with the good user interface compare to Facebook and Twitter, other than technology wise it is industry leader.
