Yes, I think it would happen one or the other day, as one day PAGERS were ruling the market for messaging passing telephone numbers etc., we never thought one day they would vanish? once when the local calls would be very cheap or voice mails covers the market and available for with much cheaper rate, i think SMS would vanish one day!!?

Yes with 3G and whole lot of new technology on the platter in coming days, makes life of SMS all the more difficult, with call rates falling ridiculously low in India, in a way SMS rates are also falling and apart from chatting through these SMS there is no means of other way of communication, and in future telecom providers will use these SMS just to send new offers or ads of a particular product. so yes in future not now surely SMS will be dead.

SMS will remain for quite some time, because it will take time for 3G and other New generation technology becomes available and affordable to the mass community.

I do agree with Ms.Sonal here. As I already told in different thread where we discussed which is the best option among call and SMS, both are having different use cases. So, the point is what is your need and what are the backup options you have. I don't think SMS will be dead even after the introduction of 3G.

As we are moving fast for social networking without any boundry and culture, the form of comminocation, short messages will always be there. This is the easiest way of communication on move. facebook, twitters are another media of SMS.... it is going to live long in the world of communication and social networking.

SMS will not die. Just rethink its usage.. when you use it.. why you use it.. i cant think of any other option when i need to convey someone that I am in a meeting...or just go back to college days... if i need to say anbody in class when lecture is running... to join me for a movie.. all the technology that you mentioned definitely add to lifestyle.. but I thing only a more sophisticated SMS only can replace a SMS .. not any other kind of communication.

SMS will not die but it could be transformed into another form. Its an excellent source for convey info from one place to another. In India this will takes time, though the mobile penetration is more in urban than rural. SMS still has a big role to play inside the human society/community and also in the corporate world. We couldn't come to one conclusion so soon...

Unlikely that SMS will die out soon. May reduce over time... 1. Its the lowest common denominator in communication (apart from a call, of course) and the lower end handphones will continue usage for a while. 2. Also, its private - as in one cant always call/ talk, so usage wont stop, I think. 3. And, please correct me if I am wrong, but I think this is the most economical service (giving the most ROI with minimum effort) so the service providers wont let it die out so soon!

No, I strongly believe SMS will not be dead..EVER It could go a little weak... In the GSM it has been the most successful supplementary service ever. the function of the SMS remains the same... It just conveys the info. The trend of SMS chatting may come and go.. But if we see SMS as part of communication medium. Its a excellent one way medium of Broadcasting ,Multicasting And Unicasting. I think its Business value is very critical. It just Cant be substituted for any 3G services be it Video call or Multimedia Blogs or anything else. Its just like the voice call, be that much popular even if there is video calls. Anirudh Gargi

I totally support your reasoning here!! Thanks a lot for the referral. It is really interesting to note the effect of the new gen 3G and GPRS on mobile phones. How it would affect the lifestyle of some and how would it affect the services most commonly used.. Good food for thought Sonal :)
