It is reasonable to say that the automobile changed the industrial and social construction of many countries around the world. More people are driving more cars than ever before, but the car has contributed to our air and water pollution and forced us to rely on imported oil, helping to create a significant trade imbalance. Today many people think fuel cell technology will play a pivotal role in a new technological renaissance, so what do you think Will the Fuel Cell technology play vita role in Future Means of Transportation?

yes fuel cell technology will play a very important role in the future as every day there is hike in the fuel price and as of now the fuel price is less, but who knows in future and all the greenhouse effect that is caused by using fuel is causing global warming, with the use of hydrogen as the efficient form for the transportation, this will help in reducing the global warming as such.

If the fuel cell is powered with pure hydrogen, it has the potential to be up to eighty percent efficient. That is, it converts eighty percent of the energy content of the hydrogen into electrical energy; however, hydrogen is difficult to store in a car,When a reformer is added to convert methanol to hydrogen, the overall efficiency drops to about thirty to fourty percent.

As per the estimates of the various Global and National research and Industry Associations the Alternative Fuel technologies put together will merely occupy 1.3% of market space by 2030. Given this figure in terms of actual nos though it may look significant , however , statistically it is not . The Fossil fuels thus will continue their dominance in the Transportation. However there re some new "Out of the Box" ideas that are being researched in the western world, which focus on radically rethinking the Means of transportation of particular matter itself . For e.g. - Food Grains transportation thru Surface , Sea modes are a substantial part of National expenditure incurred. Therefore cross country pipelines originally laid for GAs and Oil transportation are being looked at as the possible new source of Transportation . Imagine the amount of Fuel that will be saved globally !!

Yes, fuel cell is very promising. At the moment there are few issues with storage and use of the same. Storage of Hydrogen at high pressure in moving vehicle is a challenge, but threre are lot of improvements already made in this area.

Good discussion here. I think we should at it with a view of time frame at we are talking about. The transition to fuel cell will probably be a gradual one from plug-in hybrid to all electric to fuel cells. The biggest issue (apart from cost) that an EV may face is that of energy density (or range) and fuel cells can overcome it. Of course, cost and hydrogen production are issues, but, if we think about hydrogen production from renewables (recent MIT breakthrough) or self-reforming as in ceramic fuel cells, some of these issues can be overcome. Given some time and enough will power, I think there is a good chance to fuel cells making it into our vehicles(I have driven in Fuel cell cars and buses) and it is a very good feeling !

The efficiency of a gasoline-powered car is surprisingly low. All of the heat that comes out as exhaust or goes into the radiator is wasted energy. The engine also uses a lot of energy turning the various pumps, fans and generators that keep it going. So the overall efficiency of an automotive gas engine is about twenty percent. That is, only about twenty percent of the thermal-energy content of the gasoline is converted into mechanical work

yes parag reformers are not perfect. They generate heat and produce other gases besides hydrogen. They use various devices to try to clean up the hydrogen, but even so, the hydrogen that comes out of them is not pure, and this lowers the efficiency of the fuel cell

I think hydrogen fuel cell is though, Hydrogen has some limitations that make it impractical for use in most applications. For instance, there are no hydrogen pipelines coming into houses, and currently there are no available hydrogen pumps at the local gas stations where people can pull up to re-fill.Hydrogen is difficult to store and distribute, so it would be much more convenient if fuel cells could use fuels that are more readily available, This problem is addressed by a device called a reformer. A reformer turns hydrocarbon or alcohol fuels into hydrogen, which is then fed to the fuel cell.
