Though domestic car sales up 26%, bikes 15% in January.Due to the rise in prices of petrol, commuting is becoming unaffordable. Budgets are going for a toss as increased fuel prices burn a hole in the pocket. Thinking of various ways to save fuel and reduce expenses is the need of the hour. The prices hike time and again. Do it really make any differnce to the people who are still buying cars and bikes when the petrol to run them is going to empty their pockets. So will it change the way you commute?

Undoubtedly it will. Travelling in buses is far economical. Other public transports or sharing are the only ways which will save us from this plight. It is difficult to cope such cituation time and again. All these hikes are having an adverse effect on the personal budget.

Whether the car sales goes high or the fuel price on the rise, the the carbon consumption (Foot-print of individual) goes high inevitably annually. Individuals may prefer an electric car / bio-gas/fuel cell driven but, overall they add , energy consumption. Car owners' pocket /occasion may decide the use of car or other modalities.

Definitely. In an age when petrol prices are tearing through your pockets, one needs to get smart and travel smart. Car pooling has to be considered much more seriously now than ever and the govt on its behalf has to ensure that mass public transport systems are bettered and increased to reach every section of the spociety.

There wont be any reduction in sales of the cars as the per capita income of Indian is increased considerably. But increase in sales of the cars does not mean the increase in usage of cars. So there is a difference and dont get confused with the sales figures only.

Dear Natteraja,

I would request to check the changes in commute habit of residence of Delhi after the Metro Rail network. Now you see lot less cars on the road as people prefer to commute through Metro. So if a reliable public transport is available then the people will prefer that.

Give your argument...DEFINITELY PETROL PRICE HIKE IS AFFECTING THE PERSONAL BUDGET, AND IN DIFFERENT DEGREE IN DIFFERENT SECTS LIKE THE LOWER MIDDLE, MIDDLE, HIGHER MIDDLE , AFFLUENT CLASS RESPECTIVELY. PEOPLE DOING THIS INVESTMENT IN FUEL IF THEY TAKE IT IN THAT SENSE MAY DEFINATELY BE WATCHING THERE RETURNS WHICH IS VERY PERSONAL, THEN AGAIN THE POINT COMES ABOUT THE RESOURCE WHICH IS NEVER PERSONAL TO BE CONSUMED IN RANDOM BECAUSE YOU HAVE MONEY YOU MAY DEPLETE THE RESOURCE WHICH IS SCARCELY LIMITED, THEREFORE A ALTERNATIVE HAS TO BE ARRIVED UPON BY PROMOTING R&D ON IT OR FIX UP QUOTA ACCORDINGLY.RAMPANT CONSUMPTION BY BIG PRIVATE SECTOR FOR HUGE PROFIT MAKING FOR THERE INTEREST MAY ULTIMATELY AND HAS CREATED THE SCENERIO. The car / Bike sales are really not attached to the price hike in the Petrol. Basically people are able to afford buying the car / bikes now, hence they are buying. But they are really not thinking too much of running expenses. But soon such sales will lead to the era when we people used to take out the cars once in week.

The changes in the way of commute may not happen easily as the options available are limited. In face at some of the places the options like Metro, Mono rail etc are created then definately it will change the habit of people. However goverment should invest in more for such infrastructure so as we reduce our dependence on the oil.

Petrol hike definitely effects the common man/middle class communities. But people are fascinated for use of individual vehicles. We may look into it. we can take some positive steps to save the POL.

(1) Use the public transport, if time is not constraint. You can save your fuel and you can add to to the growth of Public transport system.

(2) In One of my cousin's office( Infotech) 4 friends sharing their vehicles. In turn every day they bring only one vehicle and share with other three( But time strictly followed). So they are saving three vehicles POL. A good thought.

(3) Plan your trip well. So that you can finish off your work on the way and you can avoid number of trips, hence fuel saved.time saved

(4) Fuel saving also helps to reduce the traffic in Metro cities.

yes in theoretical but there is deviation in reality. No one scared  for the price rise and every one is caring to travel with family only. People are not thinking about country's loss for  importing the petrol. Governement should educate the people about the loss in foreign currency and reveue loss.

Dear Mr.Praveen Varma, the metro rail network in Delhi is a step taken by the government to reduce the traffic congestion which is good move to help the public. But this does not mean to curtail buying of cars by the public.

Though your views are correct, I would like to differ Ms.Padmaja. The petrol price hikes will never change the way of commute. Now a days the usage of cars & bikes become a necessary in everybody's life. Moreover people are used to the particular comfort zone and they can not come out of it. Of course for some time they may opt for going by bus after experiencing the difficulties they again will change their mind. They will be forced to use the vehicles, especially the office goers. They have to spend for fuels and they will try to cut down other wasteful expenses like frequent visit to theaters, outing with their families, and spending week ends in picnic spots and other entertainment expenses etc etc.
