According to a study by ASSOCHAM (Assocaited chambers for commerce and industry in India) the burgeoning Indian constuction industry, currently worth $70 billion, will rise to US $120 billion by 2010. this growth is believed to be people-intensive. The Indian construction sector currently employs about 30 million and will provide direct and indirect job prospects to 90 million people, requiring both skilled and unskilled manpower. So according to this survey do you think, will there be shortage of workers in the construction industry?? Please give your views on this.........

According to me, there will be shortage of workers i guess, because of Indian construction industry boom there is so much happening in the name of construction, and yes there are nearly 30 million workers but because of its rapid growth it is finding real shortage of workers both in the skilled and unskilled workers.....

In season especially from Feb to june getting construction workers is difficult . There are so many places works are stopped for want of construction workers.

Moreover getting skilled workers is also difficult.

Construction is the industry which rejunivates all other spheres .

As such Govt . should take necessary steps in this direction alongwith relevant partners.

difinitely  I feel that there will be shortage of skilled as well as unskilled workers.

Even for small repair works availability of labour becomes problem and work gets postponed. Espesially in semi urban, villages availability of lobour hinders the construction activity as all labour switchover to agriculture. which means we are already feeling the shortage. In cities and urban areas  construction worker has to do 365 days construction workas there is no alternative but that is not the case with villages. Then what is the solution- . create pool of skilled workers by imparting necessary vacational training at school and college level. It helps them to become engineers or skilled technicians in future.

Yes,I tend to agree with your views Ms Pragya. The poverty alleviation programme of the Govt. of India and thrust from the Ministry of Education will slowly but surely affect the availability of unskilled & semi skilled  manpower ,in particular, which is the back bone of the construction industry. The skilled workers strength will also get influenced with the higher educational back ground .A time is not too far away when the engineers themselves will have to shoulder the responsibility of picking up the trade skills of carpentry/masonry/tiler etc.as in the western countries because of dearth of such tradesman and the impact of mechanisation.

In our country, construction industry is in boom these days. But the construction industry is growing so rapidly and comparatively, construction engineers are so less that there is a possibility of getting skilled labour in the future

I don't agree with venkatesh, nothing is happening from the government and from the construction industry side on this matter, there is dearth in the market for middle and senior level managers and the supply side needs to improve i.e. new colleges must come up and the industry must invest in training and development of the prospective employees. Unless there is collaboration between the industry and the government, this issue can’t be resolved.” This industry is going the way many other industries went;where there was sudden boom, then mismatch and then correctional steps. At present, we are in stage 2 i.e. mismatch in demand and supply because of the boom and the problem must be sorted out soon to cash on the heights..........

Yes there will be shortage and i agree with Pragya on this issue, the current manpower shortage in this sector is growing by the day but is still within manageable proportions for the time being. However, the pressure is beginning to tell and there is the likelihood of a major mismatch between demand and supply....

The number of construction engineers coming out every year in our country is parallel to the growing speed of construction industry so finding shortage in the number of construction engineers is not visible in the near future. Also, we don't have shortage of labours. Our slums and village are full with labours. Rather I will say, we are overflowed with labours. So, their shortage is also not visible in the near future...

I don't think there will be acute shortage of workers for a long time as now we facing a shortage in construction industry.

The Indian government giving less importance to the farming sector hence the farm workers are slowly converted to construction worker's through govesrnment programs  like NREGP etc..

It will cause the poor people in state  like orissa, bihar bengal etc to move in the construction fields of kerala , karnataka and cities like banglore mumbai  etc ..( to metros..)

So there will be more people in construction sites in due course.

There won't be any shortage of construction workers when speaking on a long term.

There shall be ups and downs. Shortage means it would increase remunerations which would inturn bring inflow of less income groups from other sectors. I thinks its a cycle which passes on from one sector to the other. Its evident in my state, Kerala where there is a huge influx of workers from the neighbouring state of Tamilnadu.

No there will be no shortage of workers in future mainly because both the construction industry and government are being proactive now, they know that the industry needs more and more workers, so government are allocating funds for new colleges to come up especially for construction courses and training institutes for unskilled workers, so i guess there will be no shortage.

No there will be no shortage of construction workers in future, because most of the village people are turning upto to the construction industry for jobs as there  is not much happening in the farming sector for them, and construction industry is growing like anything and everyone wants to cash in on the vast oppurtunity that construction industry is creating.........
