Definately we will develope our own O.S.bcoz INDIANS play very important role in software development in enterprises. They are really talented and capable to make our own O.S for our security purpose but only thing is to marketing of our product in proper way.so that it stands in the market. And after all good product creates their own value in market

I do recall reading a news item reporting that the DRDO was planning to set-up, a software development center in Banglore and Delhi with a mandate to develop its own Operating System to thwart attempts of cyber attacks and data theft. The DRDO with its 50 laboratories specialised in developing technologies in a number of areas including aeronautics, armaments, electronics, advanced computing and much and therefore. Has the capability and I have no doubt, it woukd happen, over a period of time. The new operating system it said, will be originally developed for defense applications, it may also be made available to the commercial sector; in what form and shape. Would it work in a commercial environment if it was designed to cater to specific requirements of Defense and Country’y Security needs. It certainly would not be Window like.? Having said that I will not deny that India does have the capability, and can develop a Window like Operating System, for Commercial use. Such a project however, has to be a total commercial Venture, with commercial objectives, in mnd. There is that fact, we do have a gap.and are short 0on System Programmers, even though we do a lot of Embedded programming and chip level development; a minor irritant considering the flexibility of our developers.

Is the education instilling the guts and strength to work through cut throat competition? Is it encouraging creativity and the Will to achieve the dreams and aspirations of young ones? Are the companies or whatever, will fund the R & D in these lines? Then surely we can make our own OS or whatever. And please do remember, to excel or to be the numero uno, dont compare ourselves or induce to go in the foot paths of the past people who already treaded ( non-indians). Try to find the creativity that truly discovers / invents.

Yes, surely we should be able to, after all India is not the king of software for nothing. Marketing is a challenge but a good product promotes itself. Keeping it open source would help gain leverage in the initial phase.

No one can question the intensions of DRDO but i have serious doubts over its ability to deliver such a product on the estimated time. I am sure even a small customization of the LINUX kernel with some Indian language packs will take atleast a decade to become a reality.

Operating system is very complex, it takes years to actually build stable os, what is required is basic research into computing. BOSS is based on Debian Linux....its not developed in India, CDAC just customized, added support for Indian languages. Anyone can launch search engine on LAMP stack using open packages.
