There has been a significant increase in asset ownership through build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) projects last year. Even then, Fitch Rating Agency has commented on the Indian construction sector to be stable for the year 2010 (as the rating agency expects). What do you say? Will we see a stable Construction industry in 2010? Share your views...

In my opinion, in addition to the rating agency, growth in the revenue is likely to remain strong and expected increases in new orders as there is seen a trend for many companies to move away from fixed-price contracts to ones that incorporate price escalations. Increases in new orders will ease the competitive situation. Apart from that, there can be addition to strong government and power sector spending also.

Indian Construction sector may look stable, as there is an increase in ownership of assets through BOOT projects. But, in my opinion, aggressive BOOT Strategy can lead to downward rating pressure also. Lower interest rates and more attractive financial terms has led to increased participation in BOOT projects. Although these projects are expected to improve future cash flow stability once completed, they are likely to lead to increased leverage and execution risks, especially during the construction phase including material costs - especially steel and cement - which has to be at the same level as last year.
