We have seen many debates which used to talk quite a bit internally about iPhone versus Android. Yes, it was a hot debate. And yes, in 2010, I was obviously in the iPhone camp. And this annoyed those who saw the promise of Android. “But Android will eventually become much larger than the iPhone,” And its showing what it can do. Today there is very less talk of iphone or iphone operating system, but more on Android.

So, what do you think people...will we see Andriod exploding in 2011?

The current market share of different platforms as of Dec 2010 is as follows:

1. Symbian - 36.6%

2. Android - 25.5%

3. iOS - 16.7%

I dont see iOS share going down against the Android. What Android can eat up is the Symbian user base.

However what makes the situation more interesting is the JV of Intel and Nokia under the name Meego. I think 2011 would see a big cat and mouse game between Android and Meego

Just see CES 2011 at las vegas, its backed by google and with tie up with most hardware brands, android will surpass apple ios and blackberry combined easily!. Nokia needs to really speed up meego if they want to remain relevant.

Obviously. Its popularity is increasing day by day and would surpass symbian's market share in the near future!

I really dont think so...but what concerns me about Android’s success is if it does to Apple what Windows did to them in the 1990s. That is, drives them into near extinction. There are plenty of reasons to believe why this won’t be the case — but history does have a tendency to repeat itself. What if everyone does decide that they want a free smartphone subsidized by search? How does the iPhone survive in that environment?

I don’t think that will happen, I think Apple has enough ecosystem leverage with things like the iPad, iTunes, and their apps, that it would be very hard for a full collapse to occur. But it is something that has to be thought about.

Surely MeeGo is the other player in 2011. It will be a natural progression from Symbian to MeeGo for most of the Nokia development community. As far as iPhones are concerned they are far more stylish than anything else...they have their own user base and its going to hold in 2011.
