Cloud Computing is the latest term for SaaS (Software as a Service) which was started as early as 1998. So it is now a somewhat mature service. Most people who use computers do so mainly for office, productivity, and entertainment purposes. They use a word processor, a spreadsheet program, and a browser (to browse the Net, check their e-mail, shop online, socialize, and play games). Usually, the word processor and the spreadsheet program are Word and Excel which are Microsoft programs. A cloud computing service, ideally, would lower costs for customers in terms of installation/implementation, usage, upgrades, maintenance, and support. Since the service can be accessed via a browser from any device that can run a browser e.g. a netbook or a smartphone, it will result in lower hardware costs for computer users. This is even more possible due to the exciting features and capabilities of the recently released HTML 5 standard. Of course, since this means that piracy will be impossible, we can understand if many software pirates in India and other Asian countries will not be going "ga-ga" over cloud computing. So, except for software pirates, hardcore gamers, computer enthusiasts, and software developers, I'm sure that the average user will increasingly adopt cloud computing as it will mean less headache, less cost, and more mobility. :D Thus, Microsoft Windows will slowly but surely be replaced by another OS albeit from Microsoft itself.

Windows is an world wide famous and realiable operating system for Computers.Microsoft launches its first widows operating system on 1985.Till now Microsoft presented various kind of windows operating system like windows 2000,Xp,Vista ..But In 2010 Microsoft totally going to change these concept by launching Cloud Based Operating System and rumors are there that MIDORI will be their first such operating system, which will replace Windows fully from computer map. The main idea behind MIDORI is to develop a lightweight portable OS which can be mated easily to lots of various applications

Cloud means far distance, Window means near distance. In real-time system Window system having full controls. In oder to enable the Cloud system enarmus amount of supporting in all the manner is reqd. Lot of involvement Man, Machine, Money and who will be maintaining the whole thing at what cost. At present situation not possible.

Cloud Computing not a system envornment, only limited overhead for particular system. But Windows not like that it handles every thing such as KERNAL, USER, SECURITY, THREAD ETC..

its true as everyone of us want to be mobile and want to access our systems from anywhere so cloud OS is much promising in that respect.but before cloud OS can replace windows it has to go a long way, but as the things shaping up it will replace the windows in long run.

Well above all Microsoft is trying for long to bring a certain profitable option to keep earning for long. By introducing this cloud they gonna keep earning and regarding cloud its totally uncertain. As i asked many people and professional who are into it. They gave me its good for low value data but no good for high value data. People would better opt for open source rather then keep paying for long just for sake of microsoft, amazon, etc.

Would your data be secure if you put your system info on clud???? Just a simple question?????? Can anybody??? I am not opposing the cloud environment but if you won't be aware of but putting your data on cloud or even your personal data is not secure. I don't believe any company for my data and regarding cost cutting i guess atleast i don't want to run on dummies for my own enterprise or personal data.

Certainly not. That too in the near future. Windows came out with its Azure and Google with its Chromium OS but they folows different tracks and technologies. When it comes to "pay as you go" model of Windows Azure or the open sourced Chromium, we can not trust the data security and service availability, since things are taken completely online. And also, for a country like India that does not have very great Internet facility in terms of speed and coverage (generally speaking), Cloud OS cannot replace the Windows OS now. Feasibility and flexibility matters a lot. Lot of research to be done and Lot of services are needed.

Look ... Microsoft knows / watches everything. They are to keep pace with whatever happing in the Tech World. Ultimately they may not llike to loose their market share. Cloud computing, has equally been adopted by Microsoft. They have launched their version of "cloud". I believe, this is like "Centralised System" ( Core Banking Solution ... for Banks ?) and may be helpful for "Anywhere Anytime Connection" ... a good advancement though. So ... say Cloud ... Microsoft Cloud. This way or that way, MS is present everywhere.

I don't think that cloud os can replace window .as you see window has many more product as par demand and a lot of user can using the window they can not just shift to cloud as its a new technology so try it yes but it affect window slowly slowly but it can't replace windows.

As far as I understand the concept of Cloud computing and virtualization is to minimize the investment on resources like server space, software and tools required for any organization to design, develop and host their applications or services to end users. As a result the end user's still need to have systems with operating systems, even though he is going to use a service or application hosted on cloud. So, due to the concept of Cloud Computing and Virtualization, the investment of the organizations will reduce. However the end users still need to have a PC with software to connect to the application. So, there will be some decrease in Windows OS but not drastic.

Agreed technology is changing, still people think how user friendly it is, Windows is having its strong position only because it is user friendly. It takes long time to people to change from regular one to new one

I definitely want this to happen, as its a advanced leap in technology and has a lot of potential to give user more powerful features. But sadness is we will not get such fast data connections in India atleast for next 3-4 years. We had to wait almost 8 years after 3g was introduced, just to hear that "Indian consumers might get 3g". Google is testing there 1gbps lines in the US n we are still falling behind 30kbps (avg. indian speed). Now tell me.. with all these lags will we be able to accept cloud computing ??? :-!

Looks like there is a huge gap in understanding. To my Knowledge this topic wouldnt arise if we understand the three aspects of Cloud, IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service), PaaS (Platform as a Service) & SaaS (Software as a Service). Providers who give PaaS (is we call it Cloud OS) will have to go either with any of the OS which has been custom made for PaaS Providers. Windows Azure (The Windows OS customized for Cloud) has already started making its mark. To Support SaaS developments, Azure provides useful services like .NET Services, SQL Services which lessens the development time and also provides the required APIs to create the S+S (Software + Services) based applications. Looking at the commitment and investment being made by Microsoft to develop eco-system around Azure gives a feeling that in future one can use thier windows box either as Standalone PC while disconnected from Net or Cloud based machine while connected to Net this gives full power to the Windows users. Looking at all these, I dont see Windows fading away.

Cloud computing may replace windows for large corporates and may even mid size corporates, in future. Another important aspect is "internet bandwidth". Even after accomplishing the above, Windows will still have a strong base all over the world. I dont think we can say that "cloud will replace windows".

some misconceptions here - the Cloud does not have any user OS per se - it provides you hardware resources in terms of leased Windos PC's / or Linux Desktops etc. An operating system must be "run" on these virtual PC to host the application software you need and you can select the OS desired - so if you want MS Office or a VB.NET app to be run you will need to install the windows OS on your leased server / virtual PC In many cases all you may need is browser access to your data and any OS will do on the device that is accessing the cloud - but in the cloud itself the OS / Virtual PC you access will have an OS suitable for your app like Winserver 2008 or Win 7 or the Mac OS, whatever your app was designed for. However cloud architecture and services are a new way of doing things and any PC based OS including Mac, Linux etc will itself need to evolve to optimise for that environment, hence the new developments mentioned. So in principle there will be an OS on the virtual PC and there will be an OS on the device used to access the cloud. So MS does not lose anything as the licensing (no of users) simply shifts from ground based PCs to the Cloud PCs and you will still buy a "license" to run Excel etc, with the main advantage being that you pay as you use and only for what you need. So you won't spend on the whole MS Office if all you want is excel. many things will change but the OS is a key part of how devices run and communicate with each other and that is not going away :-)

People don't trust MS security measures as it is. It would be too easy for people's data, data bases and company and personal information to fall into the wrong hands. I think there will always be a hybrid between cloud computing power and local user managed information. This also works as a redundancy measure in case the "cloud" goes down there isn't a total loss of computing capability...

No doubt, cloud computing is an emerging technology to decrease hardware and networking cost and increase the pace at which newer applications are deployed in any organization. thereby increasing the pace of innovation. It also enables a service provider to provide the hardware service of any prganization thereby increasing the outsourcing. But there are two limitations: 1. The technology will be increasingly complex for the IT professionals of any organization to deploy in their own. The hardware cost may come down but there can be an increasing cost of a third party service provider. 2. The applications which are already running in any organization need to be scaled to the new architecture which will change the entire design topology and migration cost will be substantial.

Cloud computing still has a lot of waiting period to replace windows since internet connectivity speed in India post broadband/3G launch also is lacking miserably in comparison to global standards and that would be the primary hindrance to overcome. Also divulging personal data to remote servers would be a habitual blockade in peoples mind preventing the acceptibility of cloud computing as per as personal and industrial usage is concerned.

I doubt Cloud OS will ever replace Windows OS fully. Personally, I don't like the idea of my data being stored on a company server, which make my files readable to every wackjob, who knows how to hack. Moreover, I'm not willing to pay hourly, for access to hdd space + Internet + computer. Although for some people it can be handy, especially for the people who travel a lot, and need to get at their data wherever they are. On the whole Cloud OS will never replace Windows OS Totally

Its still a long way to go. People still need to understand the cloud computing and virtualization capabilities. Cloud based OS or applications need internet connectivity, which is not possible to have all the time at all the places. So technologies still needs to get matured, and people should go for proper application on right technology.

Windows OS may not completely replaced by Cloud OS, but if Cloud is so successful and reach everyone, then down the line 20 years...we may not see Windows OS. But Cloud OS will be useful for enterprises not to everyone.

No, I don't completely agree that windows will go out of the market so easily. Today more than 95% of computers & other devices use different forms of windows. Though the new technology is innovative but people know less about it & most of them are worried about the security of the information they are going to put in the cloud based operating system.
Moreover, not much assurity has been provided from the company. And the new technology is very costly & it can't be afforded by the mass.
So, I think it will be very tough for the windows OS to leave the computer map.
