Microsoft Is Pinning Its Hopes on Windows Phone 7.  If its new excursion into mobile is a hit, Microsoft stays at the center of computing. If it flops, then it will be a big time setback for Microsoft.

In an interview shortly after he unveiled Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 mobile software on Oct. 11, Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer declared a new era for Microsoft. "This is a big launch for us a big, big launch." But with already Apple iphone and Google's Androind phones ruling the roost, can Microsoft crack it, And does the world  need another mobile platform like this?? Share your views on this....

Windows 7 Phone is not exactly a new platform. It's software is developed using the same technique as you can use for desktop solutions without compromise (as was with Windows CE/Mobile and the Compact Framework). The Windows 7 Phone is therefor a logical evolution for the former mobile platforms.

You could have asked the same question when the IPhone came to life and again when the Android hit the market.

Each OS has it's own strengths and weaknesses meaning that they will target a different audience. The IPhone (and IPad) are now considered status-gadgets and are bought by people longing to fit in rather than because of their usability/functionality. They are all excellent platforms but as long as people use it merely to browse and chat, what difference does it make?

Personally I don't care about the platform as long as the builders could finally agree on certain standards to make your application run and not restrict some good options for the software builders (like Adobe Air or even Silverlight). Committing to HTML5 is useless since that has a prognose of being fully functional in the year 2022.

No, we don't want another mobile platform, as by almost any measure, Microsoft is nearly out of the mobile game. Its market share fell to 5 percent from 22 percent in 2004. Customer satisfaction of Windows smartphones is very poor and according to a report lies very low at 24% and it's 74% for iPhones and 65% for handsets powered by Google's Android. There are a few hundred apps for Windows mobile, vs. 250,000 for Apple and 70,000 for Android. Asked about Windows Phone 7's chances. So I do not think that the world needs another platform for that matter

Exactly , i think the title is misleading. Firstly the question/argument that's been put forward is not valid as there are already windows bases phones in the market.

Its true that Android based phones are ruling the market as far as interface/stability/multimedia capability is concerned though Iphone tops multimedia capability.

The point is , its not the world that needs , its the Microsoft that needs to get back to the mobile business.

PS : A sneek review about Windows 7 mobile , gives an opinion that Microsoft has really made a good effort in the improvisation effort. It remains to be seen how much of that effort will help them capture the mobile OS platform market.

Mobile telephony is the focus for the future. As 4G phones are waiting in the wings to be launched and Nokia is planning for the launch of 4G phones, the release of more OS leads to more competition and monopoly of the market.

The purpose behind Microsoft launching Windows Phone 7 may be to target a significant market share of the mobile telephony segment. However, as they have multiple business lines and as this line is not doing so well for them at this point in time, they may have decided to come up with this improvement.

It remains to be seen how they are going to do in the market over a period of time....

Thanks for the referral, Puja....
