Wireless electricity seems all set to enter the market and revolutionize the way we manufacture / use / view every electronic / electrical device. Will it be the next biggest thing since the world wide web? What are the commercial applications to the tech and how soon will it be before it becomes the de-facto production standard?

If you have visited witricity.com, you will see they are already building customized commercial applications for the same. Its not in lab experiments anymore. Also there are DIY kits already available: http://www.wipower.com/product.php

Some companies in the US have already started manufacturing panels. A simple Google search will give you results.

Wireless electricity is definitely the future. With the amount of research that has already been done on it and the close to ready commercial applications already available, we're talking about wireless electricity becoming a reality and starting to replace wire based electronic devices within 5 yrs. Especially considering the market value - i'm sure most manufacturers will consider replacing their power units with receiver panels for wireless electric power.

Also the possibilities are immense. Consider hooking up a wireless electrical panel to a solar panel or a wind energy tower. We're talking an endless supply of clean, green power to the whole building and there is never a need for a power socket. NO MORE ELECTRICITY BILLS TO PAY :-) your electronic device never needs to be kept to recharge and better still, no more loose wire connections.

The concept of wireless electricity is now in lab testings. Recently, I read a research paper regarding the issues of wireless electricity. The research results express that there is a power loss of 50% to 60%. The experiments should go and the power loss should be reduced to most extent. This takes some time. Other problems, any product requires five years to make the research into general usage. Since the const of wireless electricity is in lab experiments, it may require more than 5 years to reach the people.
