Hi Manveer amazing debate.

Yes women reservation bill in private sector should be implemented. This will encourage many womens to enter the private sector and show they are equal to mens in managing. In many organizations womens are not given opportunities to grow after some level, so I believe implementing  this will break those hard rules and policies and help womens to grow both in the organization and society.

Thanks......

hi, "Reservation" in itself is a highly controversial topic. Though the concept is/was to empower a particular segment "WOMEN" as now, but the proper execution always reamained a problem thus the benefits have been gained by only a handful of ppl who may not have needed it anyways. so before comng up for any reservation concept, its time to analyse if it has done any good in past and should not be implemented without removing the flaws.

Yes ! This should be implemented wherever possible. It is a need of the time. We are in stage of what is called in 'upnishada' as KRAM-VIKAS. We are not in Stone-Age where there was no reservations and only mighty was getting big loaf of bread. We are also not very ultra developed society where each one is really equal to other in all sense.

We are slowly developing where we have to see each one should get chance to develop.

In my opinion womens are always better thn men in all sense except strength & cruelty. had it been a society driven by women, then this question of reservations would not have arised. Because there could have been already reservation for men.Women have better sense of justice than men.

To take fullest advantage of woman's power in all fields, women should/must be given reservation. Then see what miracle will happen to society.

I am sorry to say so , but I would call India a unfortunate country where practices like reservation on the basis of cast still exist where in we call our democracy secular. Women in India claim to move hand in hand with men in each walk of life and prove their capabilities every where than why should they accept mercy of reservation proving them incapable and claim of women equality a fake claim. Why gender bias??? Why double standards, where women achieve they say they are better , where they fail would take support stating we need to grow we are down trodden. Keep one statement.

Anyways, word reservation in any form is like a cancer to society , be it based on case creed color or sex. NO RESERVATION IN ANY FORM IS WHAT EVERY INDIAN SHOULD WANT. Only capable people at their deserving positions. No charity.

First of all my question is, what is reservation, our political leaders are changing the main intention of reservation, reservation for those who: physically challanged, sport personalities & some bravory people. But it not meant for cast, reagon, religion or gender. By this only our nation is said to be still under developing country since the indipendance or it would be developed one long back. when it comes to the private sector,,,,,,, ! its nothing but cutting our feet by own. So there is no way to reservations in private sectors in any manner, so think about women reservation..........

Personally I am against “Reservation” whether it is for gender, religion or sect.

Why? Coz it connotes a selfish gain to those who are implementing it. And that means the politicos and their end gain is only securing votes for their next elections.

Now the “Women’s Bill” that the Union Govt has passed just after their budget session, People please observe the Scio-Political scenes leading to the support of the bill:

1.The Yadav Clan (which Has Lalu and Mulayam) claim to support if the muslims support them in their next electoral results and they will put forth certain percentage of benefits for their supporters.

2.The Modi Case reopens, on the Godra issue, thus shifting  BJP’s focus from the budget and this Bill to go and play defensive.

3.The number game has started in Lok sabha, the mid budget session has unnecessarily made itself vulnerable. It has now to get the budget passed.

4.The situation is such that as per rough estimates, the government at present has a very slender majority. This majority can undergo a change depending on how the floor managers handle the issues as they arise. Though on the face of it, the 21 members of Samajawadi Party and four of RJD may look very less, but in fact they could help in tilting the balance against this government at an appropriate time. If to save itself, Congress has to do business with Mayawati’s BSP, the UP Chief Minister will demand a very heavy price for supporting the government at the time of its need.

Thus it’s pure Politics which will decide the outcome of this ‘Women’s reservation Bill.” In general it has nothing to do to improve or uplift the Status of women.

Mrudula,

I am against reservation for anything except tickets in advance. Such changes are in the social sphere of human interactions and any mature lasting change will eventually come from within, by unwavering will of women, by standing firm on convictions in every sphere of activity be it home, kitchen, children, career or spirituality. Look at IT/computer and Indians. The "Tipping Point" came through the determination of "CAN DO" and "WILL DO" psyche of the so called middle class indians.

Women's participation in all spheres, whose time has not come but around the corner and is looking for the cue from women themselves.Let every woman say, "Who needs reservation? I am going to make it come what may" and you will see the changes happening naturally.

hi sham i support your idea.. jobs atleast in private sector should be free of reservations whether its for minorities or women.. bcoz any company or enterprise government or private needs skilled employees  (could be men or women) to get to the top.. this could be achieved only by avoiding reservations as much as possible

I am not a believer of reservation. There should be reservation for poor only...By these reservations no one gets motivated but he/she will be relaxed...Why indian women are very less in these areas, this is another question... By just giving reservation will not solve this problem...First of all the mentality of our society should be changed. They should realize if a girl does a job its same as a boy does...But most of us look it different...

I'd like to add a different perspective to the debate later in my comment here while nodding for "no reservation" in the first half.

I think there is a need to look at much more serious issues that women continue to face in "modern India". After putting a ban on Sati, there are still 40 cases registered since Independence. As news channels unfold new stories, you see women falling prey to sex hungry "babas". There are still several villages where female children are denied education because they are bound to be housewife’s in their later stage of life. Poor and underprivileged girls are sold, moved from border to border and forced into prostitution. The clinical tests amniocentesis and biopsy reserved for detecting abnormalities are being misused for identifying the gender of the foetus and carrying out girl child infanticide quietly in rural areas greatly depicted by the sliding girl to boy ratio in India (about 927 : 1000 in 2008).

I think education and bringing awareness is a key and not reservation. If you want to do something make a resolution of providing mandatory education.

If you debate that providing a "reservation" is a means to at least start a mandate, go ahead but I don't think Jotiba Phule and his wife Savitribai Phule needed that when he started the first girls school in 1848 and worked towards women and widow upliftment in an era before Independence where caste system was prevalent in it's extreme form. And although Dr Ambedkar introduced concept of reservations, he had cautioned that large scale reservation quotas could destroy the rule of equality of opportunity. Just compare this with the results that you have accomplished by introducing "reservation" system in other places. It has merely created one more forum to cause rift between Indians and only creating vote banks for politicians.

In 2006, While taking part in the debate Lokanath Misra (Orissa) had then argued that reservation was not a fundamental right for any citizen to claim and that rights like Right to Employment ought to go by merit alone. Hello.... corporate... are you listening???

There won't be a disagreement on the fact that women are as competent as males in their ability to demonstrate skills. You can see women driving auto rickshaws, women working at petrol pumps to women leading multinational firms. Women however have one more extra bigger responsibility that no one tends to consider and that is raising a family. Growing up in different organizations require different levels of commitment and I think there are lot of women who voluntarily decide to dedicate their time to family development and hence tend to retire early from their career compared to men even though their counterpart in their industry might not be as competetant than them. So what would you choose when it comes to decision between family and job? Everyone reacts differently and I think both sexes would react in complete opposite way. That leads to the other perspective of my debate that even though you would put reservations in place, would you be able to provide justice to it? Indira Gandhi did not require reservations nor Kiran Bedi. Why do you need it when it merely points to the possibility of you showing yourself less competent and hence requiring reservations? You don’t. You really don’t need it.

Focus on things that can improve education, equality and everything rest will fall in place.

Very relevant topic thanks Manveer for creating the debate. I don't know  what % share women have in overall private sector & other statastics like Mridula has pointed out regarding their growth afterwards.

If it represents a bleak image of our society then certainly some steps should be taken.

Without woman empowerment & participation; no society can be called civilized.

Thanks for referral Nitin.

Ideally speaking "Reservation should not be there at all".

Reservation if any must be like one time assistance to make up for neglect and through bettering on resource provision.  Meaning provide free better education and assistance during this period that they can come up and get competitive.

Even generally reservations if any should only be on economic grounds and one time.

Rest is appeasement, exploitation and degradation nothing else depending on where one stands to watch, participate or benefit.

Hi,

I completely support Nitins point of view on this topic. In my career also I havent come across any situation wherein their is discrimination based on gender. Women are already working at par levels comapred to their male counterparts.

Introducing the concept of any kind of resrervations  will only ruin the priavate sectors competetive culture.

I think "No Reservations" is one of the USP for private sector.

First of all we need to stop looking at problems from a gender perspective.

I have seen both men and women exploited in all walks of life. On the other hand, I have seen both men and women "exploiting others" in all walks of life.

So why do we look at problems from a gender point of view.

The social ills that we see such as dowry , domestic violence etc have  very deep rooted economic causes.

Rich persons who have lots of wealth and  who marry well off women would not seek any "dowry". It is more likely that someone in lower middle class seeks dowry, that is just another expression of the lust for wealth.

What does gender bias have to do with the people's lust for money ?

I have been saying this so many times and yet I am saying it again. Problems that you see : whether it is the suppression of  women , or the suppression of  the poor are not due to any gender bias. Those strongly have a financial cause.

Unless we remove our  glasses which are tinted with the gender bias, we cannot do anything to improve the situation of this country.

Even hundreds of years back we had  "Queens" ruling so many kingdoms across the country. Were those not women ? Did they need some "reservations"?

The problem with the Indians is that they will find shortcomings with everything other than their own lust for wealth ("yeh dil mange more money").

Dear All

Contrary to the popular belief and opinion, I think reservation or quota of any kind for segment of people, in fact bring-in serious set-back and depravity to that segment.  Reservation guarantee opportunity and hence curtail/kill the innate nature of human ability for that segment to develop, excel and find their place in society/world.  Hence it acts as counter to their real development.  Please think beyond the surface.  Reservation is the most serious damage one can do that segment.

What is really needed is EQUAL opportunity and not reservations.

Regards - Ignesius

Caution: This is my personal opinion ONLY.

It is really a good debatable point to discuss.  Nice initiative manveer.  Here's my perspective

I dont think we need to implement any reservations in Private Sector or anywhere for that matter.

And mridula's comment that women are not promoted to higher levels is very very UNTRUE.  Nainalal Kidwai, Renuka Ramnath, Indira Nooyi, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chanda Kochhar, Sonia gandhi, Pratibha patil are a few names of a long such list of powerful and successful women who are making INDIA proud.

First of all women today have already proved themselves across all sectors and industries that they are no less than their male counterparts and nobody can deny them their rightful place.  But it is really sad to see that the main purpose of reservation itself has been lost somewhere in the pseudo bureaucracy and ill political interests.  Reservation's main purpose is to uplift the under privileged people, may it be SC/ST, minorities or Women.  This can be done in many other CONSTRUCTIVE ways than implementing reservations.  People think that once reservation is given, it will solve all the problems.  But mind you that Reservation is not the END of the PROBLEM; it just is one of the very small means to solve the problem of giving equal opportunities to all, especially bottom of the pyramid.

Underprivileged are called underprivileged because they dont have means to satisfy the basic needs.  Poor people are unable to send their girl child / children to school because of cost, improper sanitation, mal nutrition.  So provisions should be made to provide free food, education and proper sanitation facilities and encourage them to use it by making them aware of all their rights.  There are many such positive initiatives that can be done which would REALLY solve the purpose.  I would rather say that by giving rampant reservations would make them more dependent on it and thereby less competitive.

Moreover it is really strange to see Nowadays RESERVATION in INDIA has become some kinda proud possession and a hot topic for political parties to gain brownie points.

It would be really great if constructive methods are implemented rather than RESERVATION.

Pertinent to the Private Sector, it is already matured and gives equal opportunities all so we should at least spare the good environment prevailing
in private sector from the curse of reservation.
