Microsoft has finally seen fit to release Surface in the UK, a year after it was first launched in the U.S. and Canada. One-hundred-twenty partner companies have already signed up to take delivery of the devices, including Tesco and Carphone Warehouse. Microsoft Surface is a multi-touch device which at first glance seems like a vastly over sized Apple iPhone. Although I’m not sure Microsoft would thank me for the comparison. In essence, Surface is a normal PC which instead of a monitor, keyboard, and mouse combo uses a 30-inch horizontal touchscreen as its form of interaction.

Hopefully we have left behind those days when proprietary products could become runaway hits in consumer tech marketplace, barring an iPhone. If Microsoft had chosen to revolutionize the marketplace with such a product ahead of cost effective (if not free) and popular options , they would have had a better probability of success. The likes of Multi-touch capable Android, Samsung's SOLEDs and Nintendo's motion consoles are blazing trail now, and may lead to smarter innovations, possibly combining them.

to add two simple points against microsoft surface at this moment are 1.too expensive ( touch screen hardware and the software as well) 2.THe emergence of tablets ( Adam , ipad , Chrome OS etc..) This surface has been around in microsoft R&D centers for a long time now and they still feel it isn't ready yet .On the other hand Google is aggressively pushing the development of Chrome OS and acquiring companies in dealing in SAAS / web apps in the could .Eventually as the OS is open source ,the price will automatically come down and touch enabled computing will be very common .I cannot see microsoft surface in the picture unless it comes out with something concrete in the coming days . thank you so much for the referral , interesting debate
