ARMY gives you intellectuals to think peacefully... Its good to join a profession that you will, but no one can underestimate what a Soldier and a Farmer does.

I regard you thoughs Mr. Ghare, we might be a paper soldier and I can be the first one to name as chicken. Still I think think I admire my country and will always try to do my level best to serve my country. It was my wish to be a soldier, but somehow it does not get fulfilled. I think the debate I started is definately not to show my patriotism. It is to know the choice of the toostep individuals whether they would join Defence or IT job or other civil jobs since in my jobs defence jobs are not as lucrative as IT jobs now a days. Hope you agree with me.

First and foremost, there are ample opportunities in defence without going into the combat area. My thinking is that the defence forces benefit more from intellectuals, strategists, organisers, auditors, MIS professionals etc. So risk is not a hindrance to join defence forces. Next is patriotism. I have come across many people who profess that they play for their country but engage themselves otherwise. I have also come across many organisers who dont look at sports as part of leisure... Whether a person is guided by patriotism or not, if he could contribute significantly to the defence forces, it would be enough. When not guided by patriotism, there is risk of activities detrimental to the country's interests. This is a negligible and small percentage and our defence forces are well equipped to deal with it. Money is not all. There are lot of incentives in defence forces. One should take a broader view...

sorry to differ with ur views Mr.Adithya, the question here is very simple.i.e. to which side u r inclined. selecting a hard work having pride with less pay and limited luxuries or on the opposite side.every work will generate some revenue and become constructive in nature.all grown ups are paying tax in some or other ways in this country and sharing the burden.i'm not confronting with u over money, but, question carries a clear comparison regarding a term called partriotism and work in soft nature which in turn tells ones desire.hope u too will agree!

This is the concern of security of our country and Money. Here not only the one point stands to decide and support the topic. - Thoughts of the person, what he loves: of course every Indian love INDIA coz most of them don’t know and most of then have different reasons but what they can do for there love? At least are they will become happy in very poor salary what they are getting from the Government? Or the Government doesn’t love the country that they can’t make the young youth attractive towards the defense of it, by providing the facilities and handsome salary.
Does it matter what I said……aha I don’t think so, all it matter about the thoughts and love, if u love your country then of course u can defense it even if your an IT professional, the concern is security. As technology has been changed, and most of the defensive things based on IT, so Does Indian IT doesn’t require the security of the Defense…… T H O U G H T S. - Need of the person, Money or Country: I can sacrifice my self coz I love my country, but I cant sacrifice my family, it doesn’t make any sense to say that I wont love my country but it arises a lot of questions in mind……..is your family getting a real value of your sacrifice or your sacrifice is valuable to Government/Defense or at least our government is capable to make our children’s inspirable to us.

If given a chance I'd definitely join Defence. I also want Defense service to be made obligatory for the youth, to bring in discipline & values in the generation. But 4 India with such a huge population, I'm not sure how its possible. May b atleast 4 professionals it should be brought in for a short term. I did give 2 tries at SSB, But Army always found tht I didn't 've the exact qualities to become an Officer! So mind you, its not tht open position also!

I dont think its right to compare the both. Both of them provide food and shelter. To take it on responsibility side, Defence cannot accomodate so many of IT. Its not the mistake of the high selection criteria of defence. In my opinion , 70% of the candidates either fail in written, or Physical and some fail during the training. Actually speaking Defence is more challenging and very demanding field , where only hand full can achieve it. So the value of having a Uniform is a feeling of achievement and responsibility. The control on mind, muscle and might is not for every one. And then to be a leader of real capable people in terms of same qualities and guide them , any mistake its a blood shed...much stressful job and IT project failure. So speaking here , we need to compare Money to Life saving. Where by Life is more valuable. So no doubt Military in right sense is a genuine job and responsibility of every citizen. No wonder some countries have it compulsory , as because in my feeeling one needs to be fit and right in making money also . Sound body sound mind. In my experience, i failed defense test in Physical for NDA , IAF ( After engineering , eye sight ) so i had to sacrifice my dream of wearing a Uniform. So i took up next best in my choice is engineering. I would have been more thrilled if i was a technical engineering in Military Services. So its right to say , Choice and Interest. I hope no NDA guys sees this blog, else they might all fire at US!!!

I can only speak for my country. We have a different problem here where it use to be a race issue. Only people of African descent were joining the security forces. So those jobs were seen as only belonging to one sector of the population. We have now moved away from that norm and people are now more placed in a harmonised situation. So of recent you find the other races joining the security forces.( Guyana is a land of six(6) races)

i can't say this debate is patriotism vs money.instead, it is hard work with less pay v/s soft/mental strain with huge money.it is correct statement that as literacy rate is going up, money has become a important and first priority rather than any hard working job.today is the era where every one is expecting to do little work and gain more and want every thing to be at our foot steps.but, above all still there are lot of youngsters who are willing to join armed forces.major set back for this lack of exposure to such kind of jobs is that we are very democratic and we do have right to choose job of our will and wish.if at all there were to be compulsory military job that has to be undergone by every youth like it is existing in some foriegn countries, things would have been different.here i wish to share a interesting line in one of my pet author in kannada Mr.S.L.Byrappa, in his novel "thanthu" he has quoted one saying that means" this country men has got great respect for army jawans and saints but, if any one wants to become the same in thier own family, they will resist to maximum extent" is this not true?

Today in this materialistic world, people are interested more in money. No one thinks about the country. Who is responsible for this? Our system. The country is run by politicians, who are elected by us. If you analyse the debates in Parliament, can you tell what is the percentage of time has been spent on defence debates. When any problem comes we all get together for the defence of the country. We all are patriotic and can give any sacrifice for the defence of the country. But it is our system which is not encouraging people to join defence, we have to change the system and make defence service compulsory after 10th Class. It should be for 2 years and thereafter it should be left to individuals to either continue in the defence are join any course outside directly and for this individual should be treated as if he has completed 12th Class. Think of a day when no one joins defence, who will defend us.

It's not a question of patriotism if you do not join Services. It's a question of interest. Also if one has potential & skill then only he would venture in this field. But if pay factor is so important then maybe guys are really turning their backs to this field. But the aura & spirit in the Services field is way above the rest. Anyone who finds solace in this kind of thought will only go for it. As for villages & small towns are concerned people flock to Services field because thats the only option other than farming for them. But given a choice I would like to step into it, if only my stamina wuld support me. But theres no less patriotism!

People are getting techsavvy. Patriotism no longer exits in the heart of the people. Young generation do not want to join defence forces due to the poor salary structure and lethargic nature of the job. Literacy rate in the country has grown several times in past 2 decades, youngsters are attracted towards highly paid IT and other civil jobs. The question arises whether defence jobs are losing their craze? Would you if given chance would like to join Defence? Why the Defence Jobs are not lucrative and not serve as a career opportunity.

In Defence there are Slow Promotions Transfers every 3 years No Family Life Mental torture of seniors Hard area postings continuous transfers from one place to other no family settlement cant give time to family and parents no contact with civilians no holidays as per your requirement improper accomodation and ration services can not comeout of the job in midway So IT Job is always secured and better for stability and settlement in life

Those who have joined defense forces with high qualifications quit it at the earliest possible exit. Why? 1. Lack of growth opportunity based on merit. 2. Mental torture by so called senior ranking officials whose qualifications does not merit and only aging is their criteria for promotion. 3. Promotions are limited and can rise only 2-3 ranks in 10-15 years cannot bring out the best in you Many who have left the defense services have excelled in the private sphere and had they continued their service in defense they would not have achieved any thing.

I am supporting the opinion expressed by Dayanand Deshpande.
Due to possible little interest of joining the military service, many countries adopt the obligatory military service. Thus, everyone has to serve in the military either voluntarily or involuntarily. After all, there should be some people out there to defend the country.

What is wrong if people are getting tech savvy? It's helping the economy. Are only those who join the armed forces patriotic? Salaries of armed forces was restructured in 2007. Those who want to serve in defence need to pass an exam and an interview, means they have to be capable. Similarly people who opt for IT need to be capable to land a job. There are many who join the NDA and IMA every year. Our growing economy is due to industry and civil vocations, which if fact, finances Defence. Revenues from IT also contribute to it. So even if one is pursuing an IT job, they are also contributing to the Defence Budgets. Defence spending does not grow on trees.

Given these two choices, I'd rather do an IT job in defence services. If the basics of armed forces recruitment were to change, like in many countries, where people are given a choice of mandatory defence training and may pursue a vocation of interest during peacetime, there would be many IT guy's joining. But to only stick to a defence post, even during peace time, while your interests are elsewhere is not quite palatable. For people or countries who think "war" all the time, spending a lifetime in defence services might be a good idea. People at large, I percieve, think of World Peace and not War which is noting but destructive. IT is constructive!

These generation will not like to join in the defence due to less salary, young people will think about enjoyment, Here money is the first part of life and not leaving their parents and relatives alone to go ups and downs where the posting is. Only those people have ambition to join in the defence from the childhood will join or people who did'nt got the job or less salary will forced to join in the defence..

Dear All, Its is very easy for all us to say that we love our country and should join the defence, but frankly speaking its not easy, we cannot do do what we say. We stand by them when something happens, but we do not join the defence. This is evident in the recent Mumbai attacks. A simple instance a Project Manager of an IT company earns approx 6-8 lacks plus and a servicemen whose fights on the border just gets 8k-10k in hand, one can spot the Risk element. We say in finance High Risk- High Return, but here it is inverse. We all know today that to survive we need money and that cannot be earned by working in Defence. Also the condition of the families of the servicemen who have given lives for our nation is very bad. It is harsh to speak but if asked to do very few of us would allow our children or close ones to be a part of defence. But yes it is very important to learn the issues why this is happening and yes we can help changing the view of the society but firstly we will have to believe in what we preach..

Post XII, I tried for NDA and a couple of other officer examinations, but could not make the grade, also the entrances clashed with some other events, and by the time these exams were on, we had gone through the fatigue factor of what one goes through after XII sciences. Post graduation, I discovered IT and loved it. Those were the days there was no software exports, no software engineering - the game was you are either a pure logical guy with programmign skills of a dodo not fit for the job. IPOs, US demand for IT guys qualified with BE degrees, and India's Nehru exchange rate and generally degenerate economy where our currency always goes down the flush tank by 20% every year, ensured that we were a well suited economy to provide coolie labor for the West. Subsequently, GUI painters, ISO and CMM experts, MBAs - BEs, and even females decided to opt for BE courses and join the programming ranks. None of them would anyway have opted for defense even under normal circumstances, as the mental make-up, your general aggression co-efficient, nature of leadership qualities, ability to appreciate the discipline element of the armed forces is different. For the educated urban youth, there is a different demotivation factor which makes it difficult to join. Is the real enemy within, or is it across the border ? if so, why are defense forces not allowed to chase or take enemy ranks and bombard their close-to-border positions (pure common sense). Colleagues who joined NDA and then were a part of IPKF operations in SL have not so nice stories of a very embarassing nature, which anyway I intend to keep out of this forum, many didn't come back. Hence, I have this cynical conclusion where I feel our enemies within our country and framework are more dangerous to us, than the ones across the border. More men have lost men and limbs in Siachen due to bad equipment and materials compared to enemy fire. This debate does not fit in here, as from the inputs and argements I see, not many seem to be knowing what army life is all about. However, I can and will vouch for one thing - ex Brigadiers from the Army make up some of the BEST recruitment Consultants, and Logistic heads for BPO and Data center heads. Their work quality, ability to get the task done, stick to discipline, and ability to improve processes is of a very high and exemplary order, plus their ability to guage human nature and men. A certain Brigadier Ramadoss was an institution in this regard ...

Monetary Benefit 15-20 years go, defence career was esteemed high both monetarily and professionally. The individuals joining army were getting paid higher than the average income earned through other jobs. After the IT/ITES boom, young graduates started earning much higher salaries and were way ahead than the money earned by joining Army. Entry Criteria Moreover, Army jobs demand high physical fitness levels that makes only a marginal number of people to qualify. Given a class of 50 students only 2 or 3 will be qualifying the height, weight, eyesight tests. Hence, I think we have to compare Defence with IITs/IIMs where only the creamy layer get qualified and selected.

I do not support this argument at all! Both the verticals are such that they have to be chosen only by PERSONAL LIKING AND CHOICE! Defense has its own charm and so does IT! People who opt for defense are people who prioritise their country and its safety as their foremost responsibility and hence go the way! IT because people have a priority of making money and then the chances of going abroad and the perks attached are more desirable to them! Both these verticals are absoulute opposite to each other in terms of money and perks and glamor. The only common thread is that its US, INDIA thats gaining its eyeballs as being a power to reckon with! According to me this is not a valid debate! Sorry.
