With Bajaj recently announcing its decision to abandon the scooter market altogether, that left the market up for grabs for the only other big manufacturer Honda. Although there are others like TVS, LML but the competition to Honda's Activa is almost negligible. Some might say that the exit of a major scooter manufacturer like Bajaj is an indication of the slow demise of the scooter market, but I believe that this decision is more of a strategy decision for Bajaj than a market condition based one. The void created by its exit can be filled by the entry of new ones like Mahindra ,Yamaha and others. Apart from this with its superior bike making technology and experience Yamaha is better placed than any other current scooter manufacturers in India.

Yes I think yamaha will steal the market by introducing scooters. Traditionally Indians are more attached to scooters since there were no scooter production the demand dropped down. But it is not that they have forgot, once yamaha comes up with attractive scooters it will capture the two wheelers market.

Well I am big admirer of the Scooter concept. Simple reason is utility. I find a stylised Yamaha Scooter more productive than a generic Hero Honda Splendor. Second reason is that a Scooter can accomodate a single child inidan family and will save the choked roads of India from the swamp of Nano with its four fragile wheels. Thanks, Sri

Yeah Mridula, it would be a decent move for Yamaha to launch scooters in the Indian market. A host of reasons would be confined to the available 25% scooter market, certain revamped YAMAHA image in India after the recent sucess of their YZF-R15 & FZ 16's, bonus in the form of our very HAMARA BAJAJ exiting the scooter market,etc...

Since "Hamara Bajaj " disappeared from the Indian Market but Hero hondo accepted the matter that thery goint to increase the production of two wheeler scooty. so that's good move for Yamaha to be competitor of Honda " activa". After all, we consumer get advantage of competition in this segment, so Most welcome!

The Indian two-wheeler market comprises about 80 lakh units per annum, of which over 75 per cent is constituted by motorcycles but with the entry of Brand like Yamaha, we can see more optinons in scooter segments and this will definitely benefit a customer with more variety as well as Yamaha also.

As Mridula Maity have mentioned that yamaha, the bike with different range of bikes which is doing really well among the youth. What made the Yamaha bike a success among the youth, the technology, and if the same technologically capable scooters pave roads into India. The chances of its success is great.

Yamaha is a big name in the two-wheeler industry. I believe there are users for scooters / mopeds / motorcycles in India as there is still an untapped large market. With scooters, Yamaha is only extending its product offering which will in turn will get it a bigger market share in the two-wheeler market in India.

Abhijit this discussion is all about 2 wheelers not at all about highways & super-highways at all . Anyways just to clear your point on the ongoing topic 2 wheelers were & even are never made to target consumers who are traveling on those roads which you have mentioned. So I am totally agree with what Ms Mridula is saying about the potential of 2 wheeler market as well as its growth in India in current & in near future as well.

This is a good move by Yamaha no doubt since bikes are popular with male youngsters and the 2 wheeler segment already divided into bikes and scooters , scooters being popular among the girls and old Gen ( men N women) .So the maket still exists for scooters with Activa, Scooty, Kinetic, eterno....... doing the work. Yamaha will have to compete with these brands. The story does not end here if the scooters turn out to be dynamic or can satisfy some male ego then who knows good percentage of young male gets tilted to scooters.

We need to have a holistic view of the entire situation. There seems to be lot of money with Indian buyers to go in for the best of the cars and the costliest of them too, courtesy probably because of the black economy or the banks pumping in lots of schemes. But do we have necessary infrastructure of roads to take such kind of loads?? How many of us are effectively using our wealth?? To be one up above the others, and falling into such egoistic situations also could be the cause. I personally feel the scooters for the following reasons: 1. It takes less road space 2. It takes less infrastructure space for parking or otherwise 3. It consumes less fuel 4. It makes less noise 5. It goes at lesser speeds than the mobikes 6. It suits all Indian conditions One may also have four wheelers too, but use them only when it is to be occupied by more than two. Do not fall into ego traps. Use public transport to the extent possible. Ensure the government provides us with the cheapest mode of travel, protecting the environment. Try to walk it up where possible, it is good for health.

Good move by Yamaha, there is great scope for scooters in India. With proper pricing, designing and positioning it can be of great help to commuters. Apart from ladies, old age people feel comfortable if they introduce light weight scooters.

Yamaha should try to attract all of the customer segment. Exisiting scooters except Honda Activa others more used by female. If Yamaha introduce the model which cover all the customer segments, that will be successful to them when entering such a big market.

Ya, I completely agree with u Mridula coz the most important thing that we all very well know about Yamaha is their good performance machines with advanced designs.Though it lost its market share in our country in the last decade and was no match for the other bike manufacturers, but in the recent time it has again bounced back with its new models which has become the first choice of so many youths through out the country. And , it could not get any better than this that now they are also going for scooters manufacturing. It would also give a revival for scooters in our country coz Yamaha will surely give u a whole new reason to go for buying scooters with its newest advanced designs and latest technology. And along side scooters ,they can also go for Scooties manufacturing which share a good market share nowadays in small towns as well as big cities. So, in all way i can see good prospects for Yamaha as well as scooters industry in India. Also i'll eagerly wait for the first look of Yamaha scooters.....

First I want to Wish Mridula a Very Happy New Year & Happy sankranthi.I agree with her as there is still some demand for well designed & well performance d scooters but when we take Yamaha previous presence in this two wheeler market i think they had faced some problems with spares shortage and expensive spare parts where they have to look into..

This will be good move by the company as there is enough room for scooter market in India. The traditional scoors are phased out but the new smart, stylish and light weight scooters are attrackting the yuth segment at large. Specially meddile class college yuths and working women are using it for thier movement around the city. Bajaj would have shifted to new stylish, light weight design to tape the market. It was little sad to see the leader opted out. Even Vespa is no more playing in this segment any more.

The scooter segment definitely shows promise in terms of numbers if the pricing and positioning is done right. Looking at the growth which honda scooters have been making in the indian market this is a segment which is worth entering for yamaha as well. Yamaha has a lot of niche products which it can bring it to the Indian market for extending its recent success

Yes I would agree and add on saying that, In India B & C category cities do have big business prospect especially in female segment.Reason,in general, due to Female wearing traditional dress which makes them comfortable to ride or drive on.In smaller town,I think it will be accepted but in Metros I doubt. Any two-wheeler vehicle having following features can do better 1) Low cost 2) Low maintenance cost 3) Higher milegage 4) More durable 5) More storage space. regards.........Rajeev Jha

I don't think yamaha can revive the scooter market once again. Here is not the question of competition, here is the question of faith.Once you lose the faith then its very difficult to regain it back again. It will take years for yamaha to settle back again.I don't think design/look matters a much atlast the previous record and faith matter.

I think its too early to conclude on whether the product would really go well or not. the company is still doing the feasibility study and yet to finalise on their product line and after that it all depends on whether they are going to focus on the premium or mass market. Let them first come out with the segment that they would want to focus on then it would be the right time to discuss. Thanks.

The king scooter maker BAJAJ has decided to shut down their scooter division. if the others like M&M, Yamaha etc can see any merit in this vertical its their prerogative. But if i believe in BAJAJ, then I know that the scooter market is virtually a dead market except for the fairer sex. TVS is also cut down their scooty production. Indicators say that this segment is a dying or dead segment.

Actually Yamahas Brand Image do not support Scooter type Product. The most famous product Yamaha ever had Rx100 and so many later have a power brand than economic one. There is definite potential for scooter in the Indian market only if the product offered at lesser prise compared with bykes. Changing brand image and launching product, which has market potential may not work for Yamaha.

With the increasing availability and cars & 4 wheelers becoming increasingly affordable with low cost variants coming into india the possibility of scooter market revival in india atleast metro areas looks low. the rural area the terrain over there does not support scooters so easily. even bajaj who were the pioneers of scooters in india are working on closing down the scooter division due to low offtake.

I may sound negative here, but this can be done later as after a long pause the company has refreshed with some of their new models in bike segment catching heat. I suppose its time to gain momentum after the initial impact with new lines with full strength & energy in the core segment viz a viz dealer network, service & spares rather spreading wings.
