These days people in Kerala refrain from admitting that they enjoy consuming liquor and more that they are taken to making a beeline at the bar of the government retail alcohol outlet (Beverages Co outlet). This may be, speaking straight, largely furthered by a collective attempt by the media of all types over the years, of stigmatising the drinker as a 'serpent' or a 'reptile'. I won't blame the media or the society for overtly showering such contumely on the drinker, particularly since they live in a country that has also produced some great exponents and preachers of teetotalism, over which there are no arguments of being a lesser virtue. However, given that the society as well as the go...

i agree to your points. But for the media and general public to refer to the drinking public by the name of serpent or for them to cast them as anti social roots from two reasons- one being the general hypocracy of mallus and second being the lack...

There is absolutely nothing wrong in aspiring to hit as many as exquisite destinations boasting of exotic landscapes and folk, across the planet. Particularly, if you have affluence for a background. As a matter of fact, is not travelling nothing less than a virtue for many as it tends to bring together peoples and cultures of different quarters? To substantiate this point, would not the travels initiated by some exemplary personalities such as Mahathma Gandhi, P Krishnapillai and L.K. Advani suffice? Of all these great attempts, any sane soul is likely to feel elated simply hearing about the tour undertaken by the Mahathma and his other aides to Navkhali (Naokhali), a location in East Beng...

'This story we heard from the mouths of Bundel bards Like a man she fought, she was the Queen of Jhansi'                                            Subhadra Kumari Chauhan With the concept of celebrating Mothers Day relatively new in India, another second Sunday of May silently passed giving at least those who observe it an official opportunity to reckon some of those glorious mothers of the past - as well as the present - that have dazzled the world with the way they lived their very life. Coming to the practical world from the world of a million myths, ancient India perhaps for the first time started speaking of a totally different aspect of motherhood, a bit different from the cliche 'ca...

An article written by Dr KV Joseph that was published in the Mathrubumi daily a couple of days back intended to bring light on the ongoing economic status of Kerala as well as its economic future. It was intriguing to read his observation that despite the service sectors of the state not growing in its production sector, and 20 per cent of the total revenue of the state flowing in through the banks of the NRIs, there has been no desistance in the massive spending habit of the people of the state, which has in its turn, helped in the upsurge of the consumer service sector, making the state predominantly a consumer state. Come what ever way the politicians of the day strive to euphemise this ...

Good observation, but I think the peoples' interest can help it go places. Let us hope for the best Mr Muraleedharan.

When the people's uprising was sweeping over the country sympathising the nonviolent battle waged by, arguably a relatively lesser known Indian, a social activist, Anna Hazare, and a group of like-minded persons against the whiffy condition of the government offices bathed in corruption , many a level-headed socio-political observer in India thought that it would be unwise to make a comment on it at that point. A healthy reason for this could be the big fact that the plain dreams of the commoners who are mostly affected by the widespread corruption of a Lokpal Bill - towards the realisation of a body referred to as the ombudsman of the citizens - could well once again end up with the trash,...
