Around the clock, in various climates, in all sorts of weather, construction workers have to fight more than just the elements. Every year hundreds of men are killed and thousands more are injured doing construction work making it one of the most dangerous jobs according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

So, what are the best ways we can prevent accidents??

Training, Implementation, Enforcement

idea posted by Biswajit Sarma Project Manager - Construction of Raddison 5 Star Hotel, DS Group
Safety Engineering is now a big subject and now infact a specialized course. Safety cannot be discussed in a single line, but construction people must be adequately trained to understand and implement the safety norms mandatory in a project. Now coming back to the topic, accident may happen due to multiple reasons depending upon the activity/works like excavation, batching plant operation, concreting, material handling, road compaction, Electrical works, weldings etc etc. You cannot find just 10 best ways but there are more than 100 best ways to prevent accidents at construction site.

There is a lot said & done for safety but still we see a lot of injuries/accidents at project site.

I dont wanna discuss a scenario where PPE's are not available because thats not the point.

Accident do happen when all PPE's are available.

The ignorance towards compliance is then become prime factor that attributes to the potential risk.

Beside PPE's, the site must be safe as people are working there.

Identification of danger zones (material yards, lifting areas etc)

Proper scaffolding for access

well protected & defined pathways

Guarded railing for open floors

temporary blocking of all openings in floor.

Installation of fire extinguishers at designated places

Availibility of first aid box at every floor if building is high rise, otherwise a reachable place for every one.

Guarded loading & unloading platforms/bays

Designated area for inflammable materials.

An attitude of DONT PASS BY means, notify immediately if see any safety violation.

The most important of all: safety induction for all will be a must before entering to any construction site.

Emergency number of important personell, first aid procedures to be displayed at many places on project.

Regular tool box meetings.

Actually there are no 10 ways to stay safe, as requirement of safety do differ from project to project.

They are way different in residential/commercial, high rise, plant & oil field

Safety Harness

idea posted by Pragya Kothari Construction-Heavy, DLF

Another way to protect workers on the job is to equip them with safety harnesses. For additional security, harnesses can work together with personnel nets rather than replace them. Many different kinds of harnesses are made for different jobs. Each of them provides the same basic benefits with additional provisions for maneuverability or attachments.

Always be sure to check the parts of the harness because they are all important to the strength of the device. If you notice any wear or signs of fatigue on the straps or D-rings, the integrity of the equipment may be compromised and should be replaced.

its the duty of the project manager, to develop the culture to adopt safety norms, for which you have to educate the employees and let them understand the importance of Safety.

Safe Zone

idea posted by Anjali Sinha Construction-Heavy, Sobha Developers

Because of the nature of the work, construction will always have potential danger involved. One century ago, men used to work up on the high steel with lines of men waiting at the bottom to replace falling workers. Thankfully, this is no longer the case.

Great strides have been made to secure the construction zone and create a safer environment where workers can perform their job. Secure construction sites boosts the morale of the workers, which creates more production and better quality work, not to mention lower insurance costs.

Securing the construction zone has many benefits that will help take it off the list of most dangerous jobs and enhance the business itself.

In construction safety is a big issue . for that a safety training program is very necessary in a project. There we have daily meeting for that . we celebrate the safety hours. a team of safety engineers is necessary in project site.

Safety management

idea posted by uday singh Asst. Manager/Manager (Technical), itc

Safety in construction can not be discussed in one line. Complying with BOCW rules and OHSAS 18001 will definitely help for reducing injuries in construction safety. Training, enforcement is major part of safety managment but it safety also should be considered from engineering stage in a planned way, if realy safety consciousness is there. Just keeping a safety supervisor, safety officer at site under project manage will never help for reducing injury, it should be in line with real managment system. Its bitter true still safety management is given least important in most part of world.

Safety measures must be followed strictly at site .This must be mandatory that any person entering the work area must be well equipped with safety measures.

First Understand wht worker want

idea posted by Ajit Singh Manager Projects, Shubham Infrastructures

My friends has given to many ideas to prevent construction accidents, but in my view we have to first the nature of the laborer engaged in such type of work, If we engage a labor who has never worked at height, he definitely faced the accident after providing him training and other rules because of his less knowledge of working at heights.
