To reduce the use of plastics we have a new rule according to which if we want a plastic bag we have to pay 2 rupees or for bigger bag 5 rs extra. This rule was definitely to stop the use of plastic but it is not working as desired. Many times we end up paying for a plastic bag when we have forgotten to bring one from home.

Are there any other ways to face this challenge?

Please do not come up with alternative like carry your own ban or ban plastic because such alternatives do not work practically.

Chargeable strong paper bags

idea posted by Kavitha Shankar Sr/Principal Coresspondent, ABC

If they want to charge us for anything then that should be a paper bag and not a plastic bag. This can be a way towards the real change.

Please suggest how can we spread this issue and bring it into the notice of higher authorities.

Stop Manufacturing plastic Carry bags

In the past increasing the price of tobacco and alcohol did not reduce consumption of these harmful products. Instead these products have become main revenue earning sources for the governments of the day and the government is no more interested in stopping the production of these items. Introduction of prohibition in some BJP ruled States resulted in government making available the so called better quality liquors and these have been priced higher than the earlier Arac. The original Cheap liquor has re-entered with a new label with out improving the quality of product. We have seen all such gimmicks. Instead of increasing the price of plastic carry bags we should stop producing such bags and produce alternate environment friendly carry bags.

According to my own view, charging for Plastic/polythene bags will definitely reduce use of plastics, but it can not stop. My personal suggestion we should give importance to social study in each & every medium of education to create social awareness.

Plastic Bags Charge either each Rs. 500 or Rs 1000 fine if caught in public by Police will bring. Those caught selling 6 months jail. Will deter the public and common man from selling or using plastic bags. Whether it is practical is to be seen. Also Supreme Court and Public need to have free and affordable Jute/cloth/paper Bags at shops.

Sir, imposing fine by police will add to already existing corruption practices and what if the same policeman uses plastic bags at home or public places?

People will stop using Plastics gradually.

idea posted by Shruth & Smith Group Owner, Shruth & Smith Foundation
In the beginning, people would find it difficult buying a plastic bag for Rs 2 or 5, but gradually they would remember to carry a bag from home before they go for shopping. This way we can bring some good change to the environment. The Government is very much right in bringing such a rule. We should follow it. It is for the betterment of none other than us and our upcoming generation. Lets all understand that. Paper means destruction of forests, plastic does not get decomposed quickly, why not carry One's own cloth bag like old times when going to shop.

self-regulation

idea posted by S. Muralidharan Executive Director, Knowledge Foundation & Campus Around the Corner
No regulation, other than self-regulation, can really stop this plastic menace. There are a number of recyclable options available for plastic bags. If we consciously use these options to recycle them after personal use, then they would not create any problem for the fertile soil.

Big Bazar are charging Rs 2/- per bag made of recycled cloth.I think paying small amount is no big deal. Even some pharm shops are also giving beautiful bag made of recycles papers free of charge. If any one is charging for plastica bags that is not proper. As for bringing matter ot higher authority, this can be done by submitting a memorandum to civil supply department.

Referring here to the kids and children. Let us start the change by targeting school going kids. Make it a rule in schools that no child will bring eatables or anything in plastic bags, teach them the harms of plastics.....same applies for teachers and other school staff too.. slowly and gradually implement the same rule to colleges, then offices...a huge part of population can be covered this way..........

Govt subsidy for paper bags..

idea posted by Jay Prasad Freelancer, Telecom/ISP
Govt should provide recycled paper bags similar to plastic bags of different sizes so that shopkeepers will not need to buy plastic bags. A fraction of money that is being spent by govt to dump plastic bags can be used to subsidise paper bags.

There is nothing wrong if we use plastic bags provided we take proper care to recycle and reuse it. The present problem is because of our own littering habit as a result these bags choke drainage finally. After all do we have proper drainage system any where. This is providing one excuse to inefficient governments to take shelter under plastic bag for non maintenance of our drainage systems etc. It also provides an opportunity to corrupt people to take bribe and allow people to continue use of plastic bag. It also provides funding for unnecessary tours and travels of our ministers, provides fund for their luxury car purchase, helicopter purchase etc etc. One of our participant is giving an idea of collecting fines to the tune of 10000 and so on. If all of us think in the same line it is the government that will grab such suggestions first and use that money for politicians welfare. Best thing is if it is the thickness of the plastic bag that is causing problem then stop manufacturing plastic bags of that thickness. Stop using plastic as packing materials particularly for very small items. Why make common ma target for each and every thing. We have some motor vehicle rules that make use of a large chunk of the traffic police force for, hiding near traffic junctions to catch traffic violators. Instead why cant they make use of the traffic police force to guide and control traffic. We use plastic because it is made available. who is making it available? It is the government? Then let these politicians pay the fines, who make law and give license.

We cant remove the usage of plastics over night, However we must stop it or find an alternate way of using it and finding out a method to make it biodegradable. Its Causing Harm we should agree. But converse see the beauty of it. It cant be destroyed even for 1000 years. Use this property appropriately, We used it for wrong purpose for our daily needs. So we decide now.. Upto Scientists to give a solution for the science perspective, as common people we should use it wise and reduce it whenever possible to the maximum. Get rid of it completely when there is an option for us.

In a recent visit to Coorg, Madikeri where plastic bags are banned completely. It is always advisable to carry a bag made of cloth or jute. Earlier, paper basket was very much in use and it is popularly known as *THUNGA* in the North of the country. You will hardly see plastic bags littering in the town and nearby areas however, if these plastic bags are used rampantly in cities like Mysore and Bangalore. It is a very serious issue which needs to be tackled with high hand. I really do not know what is going to happen with farmers who are under the grip of MONSANTO. I am very happy at the recent burning of farmland which was under MONSANTO vegetation.(GMO). Farmers are committing suicide and the fields are not yielding enough. Please check the link below:-

It is like printing " cigarette smoking is injurious to health and tax cigarette heavily. Cigarette is one of the main revenue earning source to governments after petroleum products and liquor. Unless you stop making available plastic bags, cigarette and liquor and implement alternates immediately we can not stop Plastic bags. This is a gimmick of the Government to increase its revenue for spending on luxury cars and unnecessary TRAVELS OF ministers and politicians. What will happen to all those manufacturers and people employed in plastic bag industry. We have many such issues. Compulsory wearing of helmets for driver and pillion. Our Road infrastructure is poor. Population density in urban area is increasing because the politicians and officials take bribe and allow people to build more houses violating building codes resulting in increase of cars for which no parking is provided. where these cars have to go? result is road blockages. people do not start early because of our own customs and then rush to the office. There will be unnecessary travelers who would like to attend marriages and other functions adding to the problem. result accidents and government wants to save your life even with a broken leg or hand. All these tamasha's are for making money for politicians. No one is serious about solving the problem through self imposed discipline
