Hi friends, a survey has been conducted in India over the middle management. It says that half the India's mid-management would jump at the next offer that comes their way, though they may not be looking out and nearly 15 percent of India's middle managers are disenchanted at work.

So what could be the reason. why middle level executive jump at the next offer ?

Due to higher designation

idea posted by Diya Mehra Executive search, ABC consulting

According to me many of the middle level executives jump because of better designation they get. Everyone wants to grow in an organization and reach a level, but in many startup companies the level of growth is small. So when a person gets some good offer he quits the company. Especially Indians consider designation as a important factor which gives them pride and growth.

Why not jump when you have an opportunity to jump because it gets more competitive at next level. Shouldn't you think of better prospects  and great life ahead? Most companies today have a short term view this has lead people to be on boots every time they get a road ahead to run.

Though long term is best option, the companies should work more towards this objective.

Most of the organisations do not operate on the theory of inclusive growth due to many reasons like the sheer size of the organisation or the management  being inept to recognise talent before its too late or do not have inbuilt  measures for clearly measuring performance metrics and also the span of the organisation leads to a feeling that contributions from individual middle level managers are too miniscule to radically alter the vision or policies of the organisation. And to top it all the is the disiilusionment and frustration experienced by the employee upon finding no takers for his brain waves or no stimulus to their creative juice.

Lack of visibility

Many organizations undertake restructuring excercises, especially at the time of depression.  This often involves downsizing, refurbishing, streamlining, etc.,  The Executives are often put in dark about these exercises by the top management till the very last moment.  Perhaps this drives the Executives to hop jobs often!

Most of the organisations do not have structured evaluation process. People need to be in the limelight to get recognition. Consequently , good performers are not recognised in time. There should be a system where middle level executives are also called to make periodical presentations and given a chance to

The most suffering class - grabs offers as alternatives

The Middle Management, as said in India, is the most toiling and suffering class. They are often 'sanwitched' from bellow and from higher ups.

The are lyable to "execute' all policies of the Management, they are to equally find suitable staff and resources to do the jobs. They are often required to look after hardwares and softwares, office premises, lighting, guarding and up-keep of the same, required to attend conferences and Audits and what not.

When offered an 'offer', from in-house or outside, they find a reason to accept it - nothing worse will happen. Rather there remains a chance of betterment.

People jump from company to company with the aim of reaching top faster. If you have read or heard NK vittal's (former Sec DOE) speaches, where he says in Government people get promotions till they reach a position where they need to know only how to sign and they reach their height of inefficiiency.

People want to be at the top where they only need to order and afix their signaturers and the work will be done and they get the highest salry and perks. If you are in the same company you may become director of some division or VP/SrVP or president of some division and one lucky person may become MD if it is professionally managed company. Even to reach the second or third level from top in a comany it takes your entire life. IT sector to day recruits 15-20 thousand freshers and there willbe lateral recrutment at various levels to the extent of few thousands. Out of 15-20 thousand entered in a year how fast you can get promotions and how many will reach near the top. There is a limitation. Organization is like a Traingle and all joined at the base today cannot reach the top even after 30 years. Some may remain at the base only. In IIT's and some R and D Institutions of the Government they have a system of rotation. Chairman of a department is rotated among the professors who are equals so that every one gets a chance to head the department, so also the tenure of Director is fixed and after that he goes back to his parent institution/department or place of his choice and gets some indipendent work wher he reports to himself. A scientist and Professor who is interested in accedemic work and research never would want to become the head where his time is entirely taken up in administration work like sanctioning leaves, alloting projects etc and not research or teaching. Inorder to avoid exodus of good people companies have a strategy to form companies within company or divisions and give good designation along with salary and perks. In some companies salasry and perk of a person holding a post at lower level in the company hierarchy may get higher salary than even the MD. it may be difficult for any company to satisfy all the needs of an employee so there is always some amount of jumping.

I find many mid level executives jump at the next offer. Many change looking at the immediate rise without properly analyzing the merits of the cases.they belive in change is the best policy. To a certain extent management is also responsible for this  .They are prepared to pay higher for the outside persons of equal knowledgs &experience but as a matter of principle they cannot offer this to the existing staff.one need to be careful in jumping as from outside it may look attractive but later on at some point of time they might realise that old was better after taking all the parameters into consideration

The real "catch"is feel in maintaining one's position v/s job contents. Some time companies hire to fill the vacancies not the position. The executive finds cheated and from the day one he starts searching for new job. So money and honey is not always the reasons behind desertion.
