Do you think India is a disabled friendly nation? I mean there are more than 60 million people in India who are disabled and in a recent news in Techshare India 2010 they reminded the government and the private sector of United Nations Convention on the rights of people with disabilities and appealed them to make technology accessible to them as their basic right.

http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/images/2009_09_02/engelliler-metrobusten-davaci-2009-09-02_l.jpg

But then before making technology accessible, first we should understand as a country are we helping disabled people like, while drawing plans like planning a city or while drawing plans for public transport are we making our public transport disabled friendly or anything for that matter whether it may be malls to public toilets is it disabled friendly, recently during the Paralympics which was held in Bangalore it came into strong criticism with the city not being disabled friendly and the authorities didn't do anything to help the disabled athletes, as nobody knows what to do. So, how do you think we can help disabled people?

Developing infrastructure which is disabled friendly

idea posted by Purvi Ghosh Marketing analyst, Percept Advertising

I mean even though they are disabled it doesn't mean that they don't have life though government has helped them by setting up small shops PCO's in cities, and apart from that there has been nothing done to improve their condtion, there are many disabled people who do jobs in different parts of the city but then getting around a city poses as a big problem for them as our public transport are not disabled friendly. so to make it disabled friendly we need more low floor buses on which they can travel, and improve infrastructure drastically such that even disabled people are able to use many things like a normal person.

Collectively we can do anything for them, we can even develop a paralel economy to them, everything seperately and exclussively for them by developing city for handicaped every here and there.

Good idea Purvi!! But when it comes to our government, you know the old proverb "If wishes were horses...."

Nonetheless, it is imperative that infrastructure takes priority in the minds of the government and they take the initiative immediately!! Thanks for the refeeral!

Hi Purvi!

I appreciate you on taking this topic for people to comment.Yes its true that many places are not disable friendly eventhough people dohave their hearts close to these people to help them .But many disabled people feel depndant when they are helped which they do not like and feel that they are as good as any one who is not disabled.

Hence we have to understand their problems andinstead of sympathy have empathyto ensure that such peoplehave facilities that either the infrastructure or the science and t4chnology can be of use these people .

The infrastruct whatever it may be should first consider the disabled first as abled can get over any infrastructure whatsoever it may be.I mean the planning staage itse;f planners to consider the points in mind to plan things that are suitable foa ny disable person andmake the infrasture as much as ble friendly to the disabled also.

Kind regards

Analyze disability scientifically and rehabilitate on their strengths

idea posted by SR Sham Sunder CEO/MD/Director Technoaid

Many a times, a blind person has very sharp hearing capability.  Many such disabilities are compensated by other strengths.  All disabled persons are tolerant and capable of handling stress.  Most of them can talk.  So we now have a laundry list of their strengths :

  • Patient and tolerent
  • Stress friendly
  • Good talking strengths
  • One disability is compensated by other
  • Employer loyalty
Well!  This is few strengths more than what we look for in a normal person!!  So what's the problem - hire them?!!
I am not insane.  I suggest that we should hire them in such occupations where their disability is not a big disadvantage whereas their compensatory strength is a big advantage.  This requires scientific analysis of each individual and definite training effort.  If an organisation does this, it has a winner!!

i also of the openion that analyse the disability scientifically & rehabilitate on their strength is the better solution for the desables ...cos u all must have seen many times on TV that the disable 1 which apperantly looking complete disable r doing miracle & it is possible because he/she has analyse their own strength & have work hard & got the achivement. & by this he/she shall be self dependent. &shall have full of positivity.& can be a member of regular society( not disabled)

I'm really taken back by seeing that majority of people support "DEVELOPING INFRASTRUCTURE WHICH IS DISABLED FRIENDLY".... What is disability & where does it reside??? I think it resides more in our minds then anywhere else.

In a way we all are disabled because some of us cant' climb a coconut tree while others can... some of us can't swim while others can..... & so on....

I think it is us as a community which make these people think they are less capable & disabled. It is us who are responsible for having so many beggars by giving money to them. US!!

I think if one really wants to help then he should help them the other way round. Concentrate on their strengths...teach them how to come over against all odds just by having will power to do so.

I think we can learn a lot from our villages. I've seen how they us a generator as a engine for powering vehicle just to name a few tricks. they are not engineers but they have their own vehicle built. they call it "Jugaad".

At last I would like to say that these disabled people can be more able than you & me.

Search on net you will find many such examples one such example that I remember is Stephen Hawkins

Hi Abhinav, good idea. I support you, we should improve the commutation system for the disabled. Transportation system which is presently in India cannot be used by the disabled , so we should come up with new technology oriented transportation system which will help the disabled. This will give them motivation and they will stop depending on other for their work.

Thanks.....

SETTING UP TRAINING INSTITUTE SPONSORED BY MNC AS PART OF COMMUNITY SERVICE

idea posted by NAGARAJAN B Freelancer, Freelancer

Disability is in physical form should not be hinderence to their survival. I am aware spastic society provides education to the younger ones at very early stage and provide them training depending upon the individual talents.ts

I suggest MNC should set up atleast one institute for training disabied people after identifying their talents. The amount would be negligent when compared with political funding. if every MNC sponsor one institute with 200-500 trainees, disabled persons can live independently without any assistance from the society.

In a way, I agree with Nagarajan, if we set up training institutes for disabled it will help them. But I think that it can be done by us Indians also, and I believe there are such institutes.

The whole idea is to make these people comfortable, because unless a person has their own self-confidence they cannot face the world as a whole.

Asking Disabled People For their Need

idea posted by Dhiraj Wohra Dy. Manager, Centum Learning Ltd

why to think for them....i know they need everything that has been listed above but lets check with the majority of them what is their requirement. Segment them in like minded clusters and fulfill their actual needs.

Agreed with Dheeraj, we should ask them about their problems and then giving priority of what should be done first!

Disability is a state of Mind and not Physical Attributes

idea posted by Ranjeet Rony Sanyal Marketing Manager, Group Product Manager

I think that "Disability" is a state of mind and in India it is not 60 million but almost entire society as whole that has a negative connotation to anything associated with Disability.

Today it is required to not show sympathy but compassion in words and deeds to people who suffer from any sort of so called challanges as interpreted by so the called normal people.

Let us all have a feeling of respect , appreciation and encouragement to people who face any sort of physical or psychological challanges.

"Please dont try to make another class of people in India which is already reeling with so many distinctive subclasses based on religion, language, caste and what not/
