I would like to narrate an incident to you which created a dilemma for me as an HR professional .I believe just like me there may be several other HR professionals who have faced this too

Anjali, a HR Executive working with International BPO. As most of us must be knowing that BPOs hire freshers/college goers on a regular basis. The only criteria they should meet is they should have good communication skills and they should be able to sell concepts/products(as it was an outbound call centre). While recruiting junior level people she met one candidate whose communication skills were average but he was from a very needy family and needed the job badly .He told her during the Interview that he will do anything to improve on his communication skills and will give his best .On the other hand she had one candidate whose communication skills were good and already had one offer in hand so he was trying to negotiate out on the salary part. The voice and accent trainer was more keen on recruiting the one with good communication skills for obvious reasons .But her inner self asked her to give a chance to the needy person with average skills .He not only managed to polish his communication skills but he outperformed on the floor simply because he needed cash to support his family .

When now she look back at this incident she sometimes think did she do injustice to the person with good communication skills just because he had another offer in hand and was acting pricey? Did she loose out on a good candidate?

I invite your suggestions /viewpoints/comments on yet another HR dilemma.

Nothing Wrong

I believe that she has not done anything wrong in this part. Certain decisions are made on our intuition, so if the candidate performs well, then there is no issues. And even helping a needy person is always a good act.

The person iun need of job concentrates more on job and works hard. Anjali's decision is right.

Not wrong to one part only

I don’t think so that she has done wrong, but to some extent only. Since the other guy was already having a job it was not injustice to him. But try to avoid emotions, to take control of any situations. People may say whatever they want in interviews. People from sales background quote any figures during Interview but an HR professional has to identify a person who has the zeal to grow, the reason behind that can be money prestige position anything .We are recruiting for an organisation. So whatever decision we make will affect not only but others also. We need to think the other side also.

What if the person has lied to you?

What if the person did not improve his skills?

She will be held responsible and his poor language could have affected the organisation.

I just advise, to avoid her emotions to make decisions. Recruits candidates whom the organisation is looking for, not the other side.

always judge by inherent qualities

She did right.  one should always should not bound to policies. they only show the way, we have to decided by what mode we travell in that.  We cannot judge a person by keeping a crieteria whether he is good or not.  There are many to consider.  she has given a life to a family and on other hand the person has already a job in hand and most likely the other person will have less committment towards the organisation at any time he will quit the company if a better salary offered by others.

Any skill we possess is physical which can be acquired at any time by practice.  but committment and honesty is inborn and picking such person is hardly difficult.  Now he is outperforming in the department and kept his word will prove that this statement is correct.

I appreciate anjalis decision.  She has taken a right decision.  I plead all of the professionals to remember do not judge by physical qualities judge by inner qualities. see honesty, committment, learning capabilities of a candidate.  If these three are there acquired requisite skill to perform the job is not a big task. and the persons so selected on this criteria  will become an asset to the company.

Executive Decision

This is called an Executive Decision. A decision to be taken depending upon the circumstances prevalant at that time. It can be a bad/good decision. But a decision has to be made and can not be discussed/questioned later.
