Image processing is any form of signal processing for which the input is an image, such as photographs or frames of video; the output of image processing can be either an image or a set of characteristics or parameters related to the image. Hence there are many ways in which it can be beneficial, hence discuss.

Computer vision

idea posted by Vijay Gunasekaran Project Manager, HP

As we all know computer vision is the science and technology of machines that see. As a scientific discipline, computer vision is concerned with the theory for building artificial systems that obtain information from images. The image data can take many forms, such as a video sequence, views from multiple cameras, or multi-dimensional data from a medical scanner. As a technology discipline, image processing is important to this and yes it is beneficial.

I would like to bring another angle from which its benefits can be more visible. Computer vision can also be described as a complement of biological vision. In biological vision, the visual perception of humans and various animals are studied, resulting in models of how these systems operate in terms of physiological processes. Computer vision, on the other hand, studies and describes artificial vision systems that are implemented in software and/or hardware. Interdisciplinary exchange between biological and computer vision has proven increasingly fruitful for both fields.

Agricultural applications

Image processing can be used to improve agriculture. Classification, identify deceases, etc can be done using these techniques. By Satellite image analysis you can find agricultural areas, forest, water resources.

ya surely correct...detecting the type of disease and classification using image processing helps a lot over the conventional methods. Also image processing can be applied to calculate the chlorophyll contents in the leaf regions too

Face Detection

idea posted by Amit Singhai Project Lead, Covansys

Another case where image processing techniques are used is face detection. It is a computer technology that determines the locations and sizes of human faces in arbitrary (digital) images. It detects facial features and ignores anything else, such as buildings, trees and bodies. Face detection can be regarded as a specific case of object-class detection; in object-class detection, the task is to find the locations and sizes of all objects in an image that belong to a given class. Examples include upper torsos, pedestrians, and cars.

Medical imaging

I guess this is where image processing techniques is extensively used. Medical imaging refers to the techniques and processes used to create images of the human body for clinical purposes or medical science (including the study of normal anatomy and physiology). As a discipline and in its widest sense, it is part of biological imaging and incorporates radiology, radiological sciences, endoscopy, (medical) thermography and medical photography

I just wanted to make clear that in the clinical context, medical imaging is generally equated to radiology or "clinical imaging" and the medical practitioner responsible for interpreting  the images is a radiologist. Diagnostic radiography designates the technical aspects of medical imaging and in particular the acquisition of medical images.

Microscope image processing

Microscope image processing is a broad term that covers the use of digital image processing techniques to process, analyze and present images obtained from a microscope. Such processing is now commonplace in a number of diverse fields such as medicine, biological research, cancer research, drug testing, metallurgy, etc. A number of manufacturers of microscopes now specifically design in features that allow the microscopes to interface to an image processing system. This is a area where the applications are yet to be developed but still I feel positive about it.

I dont think so, that Google will be able to dominate other business formats than search, though they are on a acquiring spree it will be difficult for them to come out with new product time and again, it would do good if  they improve their search...
Inappropriate use of caching... does that logic need to be cached or is its invocation infrequent enough that maybe a plain old CGI is exactly how it should be implemented?
