Was going through old posts when the statement from Shameena struck me like a bolt. Looking at the turn of I am beginning to wonder if too-much mechanization and computerization of our life made our lives more easy and thus rendered us rather incapable to think for ourselves. Is this the reason that the society and even individuals of today of have such short memory? The reason they get swayed more easily? Paradoxical considering that education penetration among the general public is on an all time high. Or are we really educating ourselves or mechanizing our self? As usual I am in a quandary, cannot come to a simple answer. |

it is a very necessary topic that should be taken up not only on to-step but all across the society. Shantiji is correct when she mentions that ways of gathering information has changed. So is Shameena when she warns of degradation of our capability. I do feel more than laziness, it is impatience of the generation I belong to that Leeds to outsourcing mentalities. But this will eventually lead to laziness and degradation of people.
We are living in an era where we dependent mostly on machines, computers and such equipments for our day to day life in the process we do not exercise our body both mentally and physically. When we do not strain our body in tends to come rigid thus becoming incapable of doing physical work.

It is a matter of "environmental consciousness". The more one is environmentally conscious the less freedom he or she has and this is part of earlier consciousness search of our ancient gurus and later affirmed by psychoanalysis. So we as a nation opt to be less environmentally conscious so that we can have more freedom.
May be this is a wrong choice, since this stance can debilitate our economy and stunt our progress.
So the question is whether one should trade of freedom for better economic future or have more freedom and lesser of material needs met for citizen like developed nations like US?

Yes, thanks, there need be 'rational choices' available for a budding youngster from cradle to coffin. This is the only way economic theory prescribes normal life for citizen. This might breakdown the family oriented choices in India then it will be the only scientific direction available for a nation to create equity and fairness in daily processes for the nation not the least to say the only route open to end malfeasance.
Yes! Finally it our choice. But our children has to be encouraged to be creative and original in their formative years. Only then will they be prepared to make right choices in life. I think the society is promoting the straitjacketing of individuals because of the environmental & peer pressure.

We as a society have acquired increased knowledge in many fields. We have the latest gizmos to help us make quick and more precise judgements. But in pursuit of this modernity we probably are loosing our basic knowledge.
For example, Today it is surprising to see everyone turn to computers for the smallest of mathematical problems; which just two decades was computed by oneself using his/her head. Yes! In that sense we are probably becoming too lazy to even think.
But the irony is the individual is more empowered to take decisions benefiting from his use of technology. The question is where we draw the line. Do we degrade our own capability and enhance our efficiency or vice-verse? Or do we find a balance between the two.
It is a very serious matter that should be of concern to all especially academicians and leaders of the establishments.
And Yes! Vinoy, nice to see a statement from one of my earlier post has ignited this debate.

Yes, the times are very demanding on a up and coming student - with the competitive overdose. Pressure to perform also plays a role. It does leave people in confusion where academic education starts and ends. But I firmly believe basics of education like basic mathematics, language skills and awareness of surroundings should not be compromised. The foundation stills needs to be strong. In fact stronger when one starts to build stronger structures. Or one fine day it will all crumble.

It is true that people have become lazy and they need everything spoon feeded. They seldom think out of the box and like to learn everythng like a readymade recipe. I think this is definitely not good for the social development.

Welfare by the empowered is still basically considered by the society at large as benevolence and not duty in our society. With all due respects to Meers. Shruth, I would like to forward my point that far from pro-active thinking like Out - of - box, Indian society may be loosing out on the ability for basic reflective thinking.

Homer in Illiad sings that it is background noise that confuses a child which I believe is the problem for Indian child to be confused to even adulthood.

As Shanti rightly points out Sir, I guess it the reason why Parents should be more active now than ever before in the learning process of a child, But the reverse is the trend. There is too much background noise than ever before, and parents have to constantly be around to guide their children.
Yes! It reflects from the fact that as a nation we are still to find his mooring We have not yet defined ourselves. Of-course we have all in paper, social, secular, democracy etc. But as a society we have not fully embraced any principle wholeheartedly. Hence this confusion.

There is nothing wrong in making use of the technology available to you today. But, too much of anything is dangerous. As far as loss of memory is concerned, we cant blame the technology. Our priorities are fast changing. I used to remember every contact number of my friends. I am not going to burden my mind now to remember those contact numbers since my mobile can cater to this need. Lol. To remember things to do, I have my stickypad popping on my laptop/pc. Lol again. When the situation demanding you more, you need not burden your mind for mundane activities. We can best utilise it for more important things. But I oppose kids (upto the 10th standard) using calculators and computer while doing their maths problems, because it kills their brain at the developing stage. |

Srinivasji, I do agree with your contention that the newer generation is more equipped than their predecessors. I am not questioning the intelligence of the newer generation. For the quality of present day population is testimony to very high levels of intelligence.
All I am worried about is this 'outsourcing' mentality as Makesh points out. Maybe it is not laziness as I posted. It could be impatience or changing priorities. It is open to further debate. But it is still frightening thought when people start outsourcing one's opinion making.
Lack of time or widened net of priorities is no excuse if I could venture to opinion . For it strikes at the very individuality of a person. If it is lost, What is the use of other enhancements
@ Mr.Vinoy, I can understand your concern. During the paperless age, the education process is face to face interaction. Memorizing the content was necessary then. They might have used their brain (during their student-hood) more than their later generations . With the advent of different technologies, the burden on brain for such activities is relatively lessen today. It does not mean, people are not at all thinking. The students who are aiming to study in foreign universities particularly in USA, UK etc. they are mugging up the dictionaries for a good score in their GRE test. We as grown adults have our own priorities, utilising our brain to that extent. Is it not?
Probably you can pin the loss of memory to change of priorities...... Contact numbers are best example. My 90+ grandfather remembers more of these numbers than honestly I can. I am sure, I am not the only person who shares this experience. But what about the quality to be swayed by the latest trendy viewpoint. Don't we as individuals have a duty to sit back, access the matter and then form the opinion. This is the thought that haunts me. Probably it may not be laziness but Makesh suggestion of impatience that can better explain this pattern.

We dont go beyond that "I".Yes, The youngsters, even dont think beyond computers.Logically they dont know what is society .They are thinking and believing what appears in computer screen is true.If I am a software engineer, Iknow & think only globalization. If I say freedom , it is in dress sense only.If I say salvanisam it is only male. regarding I and society "HELPLESS. I will speak smoking people to be banned. In public I will drink and dance like clowns saying FREEDOM,MY MONEY.10% of globalization spoiling the 100% of population`s basic rights, culture. We forgotten how to think,we have no our own ideas.we are biting the tip of grass where ever we go.WE DONT KNOW how to memorize. We lost all our mental ideology. We are like machines. This will reflect in next decades We gave our price to our next generation.

Yes Mr. Pandiarjunan! Nice to see a person who has traveled extensively give an insight. I agree there is no harm in trying to earn ones salary. But when we are getting to a stage where each one is not aware of his neighbors needs but only is focused on one's life. Now, that is unfortunate life for a human being to live. This becomes very evident when we see the difference of village lives and city life. Being a well traveled man, I am sure you can bear better testimony than me on this.
"calculators spoiled the basic multiplication itself/Now computers and media spoiled thoughts of society.". Mr. Pandianarjunan, this statement lends credence to this debate. You have described the gist what many have being putting forward in their post in the two sentence. But as posted earlier we cannot be a society that is closed to change and growth. Retardation is not a solution. The challenge before our society is find the ideal balance. We have as a society failed thus far in this call. It is time to do a course correction. I am also aware it is not a easy solution and cannot be achieved by sloganeering. As another post n this puts it, it is individuals that finally matter. The system will fall in line.
Mr.Vinoy,I have crossed three of your debates.A society committed thoughts inspired me.As I am a construction engineer,I traveled and fond of villages and countryside. It happens I participated in construction of some IT parks.I know some software and operation also. BUT learning is different earning is different,Thinking of society totally different. But I saw people thinking of their personnel improvement only.likewise government also. We have our traditional cultivation methods, irrigation systems.Tractors invaded cattle. The natural manure we got, vanished, pesticides ruling our culture and agri forms.NOW, BT seeds from US agri forms to INDIA. One has to think of his society and nation.tradition.Knowing ,inventing, innovative ideas ,should come from imagining the world and circumstances. But calculators spoiled the basic multiplication itself/Now computers and media spoiled thoughts of society/.To day`s economy is growth or swelling .China s` growth started from their municipal corporation. But we and govt;forgotten the 80& who feed us for centuries.URBANIZATION itself is success? No body started thinking, because we forgotten to think about the society.

Please do not misunderstand the stand of barring night shift as questioning the morality of concerned person. Frankly to casting a blanket label on any group is utter madness. I definitely do not wish to hold on to such blanketing. I am sure most of... |
Wonderful insight there P-rak. Needs all of us to think over this simple fact we always forget. |
Yes surely the sportsperson should not be barred for any awards if they are found worthy for their commitment to social clauses. To put the record straight, there is no official bar on the sportsperson for his commitment to society. |
