How had you created your CV when you were a fresher?? I am sure you took a refrence from some senior. In todays case it is just copy paste and replace.. People just change some information and add few things from their side and think that CV is ready. Is that all one needs? Perhaps no. There are many myths about resumes , whihc the biggest ones according to you?

Lengthy resume

idea posted by Dipika Das Associate/Sr. Associate -(NonTechnical), ABC Consultants Private Limited

Really! Who has the time on this earth to go through a long resume ? But still I have most of the people having 3 page long CV even when they are freshers. Everyone must understan that there is just soem inmportant informaion required on your CV and no body wants to know if you love gardening ...

Yes. Dipika, I endorse your views.  Like the one who seeks explanation of "SPIRITUALITY" in less than six words, to which we see wild and timid responses, yet people are trying their bit to give logical answer to the query, our CV should project one's personality in a meaningful way in short - one can offer tons of explanations about each brief in person!

CV is your advertisement document

CV is to sell yourself. Whatever may be length of your service, it has nothing to do for the hiring organsiation, they are interested in what you could do for them. Design your CV not from your point of view, but from the point of view of the prospective employer. There are certain guidelines for CV writing. They are Your resume is scanned and not read. Your resumes gets only 10 to 20 seconds to persuade a prospective employer to read it. The top half of the first page of your resume will either make you or break you. People more often purchase a best advertised product than a best product. Advertise your level best to sell out yourself. Most resumes are filled with evidences rather than with assertions. Assertion area is the heart of a Resume. Don’t forget that you are selling yourself but not informing them about you. Again don’t forget that you are selling yourself.

Very well said Mr Srinivas, but the resume should also be true and not hyped to the extent of which one does not possess the advertised qualities, for later on the gimmick may backlash.

Resume Components organisation & rationality of length

idea posted by Alind Saxena Managerial (Ex.), CSIR-CRRI

I have about more than thirty years long experience. After the college days it was in candidate's own handwriting depicting individual characterstics. Later we used type-writer and computers. What I feel is that that resume contents must match with the demands. Further contents require suitable substitutable words for longer sentences. The chronological arrangement is the first preference but in case of multiple qualification and varied experiene it need to reorganise and rationalised. But it is to be agree longer length does not indicate a good resume until and unless the work amount is high.

Naharul Ji, you must remember that brevity is the soul of wit. Nobody has time to read a book-length CV. It should be small like a bikini that reveals more than it conceals. You can mention in the CV that a lengthier CV is also available on demand. I will say the same thing about a 60-year-old who may have achievements enough to fill 50 pages. But that looks pedantic. Instead give a functional 2-3 page CV and mention a more exhaustive CV is also available if the prospective employer wants it. Also, the CV has to be married to the job requirements. Now a personal remark. I made a similar remark for dear Ardhendu and he implemented my request immediately. Pl change your profile picture and put your actual picture. There are reasons why I am saying this.

Better he edit your profile with his experience.I did not heed advice when he suggested restraint. That's why I am not participating on discussions on toostep as frequently as I used to be .. follow him, you will have a better future... honestly.. deep from my heart ... believe me..

Analise what you are, your strengths, your strengths that could contribute to the org, your organisation skill or experience that could be useful to the organisation.your achievements what may be useful for the company's fulfillment of its objectives. Think will you fit in in the requirement that is asked for. be very sincere to yourself in expressing what u want.use your negative points towards the positiveness of the company.Matching of your objective whether u want the job or you need a career.Based on that decide how much you would accept it if u are selected. regards Major(Retd) M Rajendran

But Rajeev sir, when you submit your CV to any Co. as fresher or as a experienced holder you have to try to show potentiality, capability and your field of experience etc. After all you are trying to sell yourself to a Co.

Ajay K Khaitan, ha ha ha. Most joking personals. ha ha ha

A leading American journalist wanted my help for writing an article on Osama bin Laden's wives and family for Newsweek magazine. Along with the request he sent me his CV which was 21 pages long. Another American academician sent me his 17-page CV. However, my personal thinking is that one's CV should be taut, brief, to-the-point and should not stretch beyond 2 or 3 pages, no matter how much accomplished you are in your areas of expertise.
