Panic gripped the national capital Tuesday after an anonymous caller threatened to blow up four crowded places in the capital the Safdarjung Hospital, Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital, the Palika Kendra and Vikas Minar. The call turned out to be a hoax, but led to chaos and traffic jams in these parts. We are seeing these kind of incidents many times and in many cities where people are making these kind of Hoax calls and are getting away from it and police are not able to locate the culprits in due time, and many times with these kind of incidents sometimes genuine threats will be treated with negligence thinking it will be a hoax call, which will be a disaster if something like this happens.

So how to minimise these hoax calls? And what needs to be done regarding this?

Harsh punishments

idea posted by Sudeep Tarafdar Senior Consultant, IBM

I guess people who do such things think that they are being cool by taking people for ride with these kind of hoax calls, and then get away, and at times it is really difficult to track these people with them also being tech savvy while they are doing such acts and in this sense we as country need to improve immense in terms of security threats, anybody can call and do these things and nothing concrete has happened till date, they are taking the police run around looking for nothing and at times people will be complacent at genuine threats and this is a problem, and this problem needs to be addressed soon. Give harsh punishments to the culprit such that others hesitate to commit such crimes, and also there should be better tracking of the origin point from where in the first place this originated and track the right person and not someone who is innocent..

It is difficult to understand the whole thing, but then people we need to come up with solutions, if not people will be taken for ride with such kind of acts and at times there might be casualties.

I support harsh punishments..particulary because terrorism is now a very distraught feeling for the lay man. These hoax calls take the common man on a very emotional ride, apart from the economy loss and the inconvenience caused. Harsh Punishments definitely..But ain't it better to prevent the need for meting out harsh punishments?

How many hoax calls shall it take to put into place an effective mechanism to prevent such calls at all? How long are we going to wait for the crimes to happen again and again and simply let it go off the hook by punishing it, if we are fortunate to catch the culprit that is?

I think Verilocation and tracking, which i dont have much insight into..sounds a good idea..

BUT the child in me also asks me one question..dont these calls also check the alertness, the much needed factor of the police and the public and the exixting mechanisms as well...like perhaps a fire drill? And perhaps arent they a reminder that we still need to do much more before the next terror strikes?

  1. It is very difficult to understand the human mind. The human mind is the only instrument to know the life, the universe and the god. But, the way, it is used now may force the god to think not to provide the same kind of mind in next era. The entire episode is exploitation of some people by making them mind less by some intelligent minds. We have to find out these intelligent minds engaged in destructive works and change their mindset to save this world. It is a vast subject  which needs serious attention of all thinkers/solvers to solve the problem right now.

Tight Surveillence and Tracking...

We should have cameras installed in all the booths and public places for tight security and call recording and tracing facility should be there if somebody dials #100 for Police.. especially to any emergency calls..

It's true. we must record emergency calls to trace the caller. and camera's installed at public booths will also help in tracing.

It should be publicize but not to a level where everyone gets panic.

Don't publicize

Media agencies need some brain battered into their skulls! And informants for these agencies need to be skinned. Let the intelligence agencies work and do their work, instead of spreading panic.

The information which the police department get is not correct allways so they should find the sources that the information is correct and take correct action about the information. The media is just giving the information without having study that what will be the effects of the information on public. So do not give the infprmation to public before conforming it.

Its really true,u cant stop people doing this type of mischevious things. If Someone calls dnt make it public, avoid media.I didnt understand how media will come to know if the department Will not tell them. When dept. itself is the real culprit of publize such a things.

Adapt Verilocation mobile phone tracking technology

idea posted by Paresh Dhembare Area Sales Manager, ICICI Bank Ltd

Verilocation mobile phone tracking technology is being adopted in US to help speed emergency response and reduce hoax calls. Verilocation provides the precise location of anyone calling from a mobile phone. This will help speed emergency response to anyone unfamiliar with his or her surroundings. It will also help reduce hoax calls by enabling control room staff to check the location of a caller it they suspect a hoax call.
