Unveil another ARJUN award

idea posted by Peeyush Chauhan BANKER
yea. too many nominations will belittle the glamour attached with the coveted award. Sports is a vast area and people showcase their talents from across the country. The list may go unending even if the talent acclaimed globally. The govt seems to have held the bull by the horn by succumbing to the demand of fewer to rope in sports as qualifying subject. It may rather go for institutionalization of another series of awards for the elite class in diversified fields OR classify the existing Arjuna award in three tiers naming them differently, like gallantry award classified into Paramvir chakra, Mahavir chakra and vir chakra, depending upon the merits..

Thanks Renashmi for a topic on sports for a change. The institution of a three tier title is ideal decision in my opinion. It will definitely be a great appreciation of a sportsperson's efforts to be awarded a title among his peers. Most of the statements made by sportsperson after getting a award highlights the weightage he / she gives to be graded among his peers.

Bharat Ratna for personalities like M.S.Subbalaxmi and other artists of the kind is an honour for the award itself. But, Bharat Ratna for personalities like Sachin Tendulkar is not tenable.

The government clearly opened a Pandoras box by this act. Why not create a new title on the likes of Veer Chakra etc for the same. We now have to consider the candidature of so many sport persons before we start award the present lot. A small list consists of Dyan Chand, P. T. Usha, Micheal Periera, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Tiger Pataudi... the list is endless.

Any awards to current lot without honoring the pioneers will remove the sheen of the purpose. A deluge of awards will also belittle the Bharath Ratna. Clearly the government may havee won some brownie points, but we have clearly opened a pandoras box.

Bharat Ratna should only be awarded to persons who have been able to bring change in life of Indians or have done exemplary work in nation building.

Other awards are available for giving to persons who may have excelled in their respective fields of activity.

The wise decision would be to undo it. But highly unlikely.

Sportsmen are humans

I believe that Sportsmen are afte rall humans and Indians, working for the highest achievements. But then we need to explain what Bharat Ratna symbolizes, does it stand for greatest achievement in only social life or in any stream? We should not find it difficult or hesitate to award a good sports man when he is alive.

Even I agree that something on line of veer - chakra should be there for sportsperson.Because as far as bharat ratna is considered it is mainly for art literature and social work and being a sportperson nowhere satisfies this criteria. And if BR was to be given why not it was previously given to some top category like dhyanchand. We all know that because of only one personallity BR was added in the list.

Amishji, I am not trying to belittle sportsperson in any which way. In fact in a nation which pays minimal attentionl to Sports , I genuinely respect who tred the path persistently and succeed in it. I know how difficult it is with everyone discouraging you and asking you to get on with the studies. In-fact instituting a award on lines of Veer-chakra will be ideal. Ask any Jawan and his ultimate dream will be the award. Recognition among ones peers is very high in such awards and titles.

Whether sportspersons or anyone. If the extent of contribution is worthy of Bharath Rathna, why not? For instance, if a sports person espouses a social cause year after year with his face, head, heart and purse; what do you call him, a sports person and make him unworthy of Bharath Rathna?

Yes surely the sportsperson should not be barred for any awards if they are found worthy for their commitment to social clauses. To put the record straight, there is no official bar on the sportsperson for his commitment to society.

Then he/she should get the award for services for services to society. Remembered nobody can bar any sportsman for the ward if he deserves it for social causes.

Bharath Ratna as the name signifies should be given to a real jewel who has done india immensely proud. And including sports, arts or any other field only adds to its prestige and glamour. There is no point in choosing a person from just one or two fields, how will you get the real jewel? The wider the field, more the candidates - intense will be the competition to get the final nomination. We can certainly have stricter classifications for choosing the final winner. As for people who have missed out in the past, a separate category within Bharat Ratna can be created to award one deserving candidate from the past like what you have in the oscars - for lifetime achievement.
